my indian ringneck has killed the other

Post by t5copper »

Hey all
very sad day, I posted a while back about getting 2 new birds olive and emmy, I did everything right with them and last night for the first time ever emmy who was scared to death of me came out of her cage willingly and within an hour was sitting on my hand and shoulder etc she stayed out all night and her cage mate olive wouldnt come near still very scared, I recorded loads of vids of her because I just couldn't believe it was the same bird, today iv come home to discover emmy had been killed, it obv must of been olive, what could of made this happen? Im honestly so gutted about this when I left they were still sleeping and getting on fine, I just cant believe olive has done this and rather brutally I might add, really what coukd of made this happen?

James, I am so sorry! I wish I had some kind of reason to apply to this terrible thing, but I don't. I am sure the experience and loss has been profoundly upsetting for you, and I really feel for you here. I hope you will get some answers soon.

Thanks for the reply, yes its very very sad, im finding it hard to bring myself to try and socialise with olive right now knowing what shes done, I just really dont know...at the same time im thinking she is an animal and doesnt understand things the way we do an maybe natural instinct kicked in for a moment...im really just guessing I haven't got a clue, my wife feels itn could be jealousy between them as its no coincidence emmy was out her cage all night then olive kills her, I guess we will never know but it still remains really upsetting

Yes l am sorry too at your loss t5copper, could Emmy have died of natural causes? For one to kill the other l would have thought there would have been a lot of blood or at least wounds that bled from both birds. I once owned two male love birds and they lived happily together for years until one turned on the other and killed it. I was glad l was not there to see but my friends had to tell me when l got back from a trip abroad.

Hi, yes plenty of blood was spilled, she had a very bad wound to the top of her wing and I can only describe it as she looked like her throat had been half cut, awful if im honest, olive hasnt got a mark on her but she is a bigger bird?maybe poor emmy just didnt stand a chance..the sad thing is she was still warm it couldn't of happened long before I got back

hen aggression is common in indian ringnecks. during breeding season it is known that some hens become dangerous to their companions. is it breeding season there?
if the head area is bitten then it is likely due to this. sorry about your loss, not your fault as this is not something you can predict.
hen aggression is common in indian ringnecks... i have not experienced this as a rule among alexandrines,,but last season a derbyan hen killed a cock with one bite thru his skull. so it is possibly a trait among the psittacula species..some indian ringneck hens can practically eat the skull - beak off the cock/companion bird and is a gory bloody sight .
I think you have probably got it right,The things that gets to me the most is...and you probably know better than me...is the fact the bird was totally wild when I got her and I put so much time in with her to get her tame and just when I suceeded this happened , people who hadn't been through this with birds would probably just think oh its just a bird...but you cant help but feel there part of the family...it is very sad, as for olive I dont know where to go with her now especially seeing the effects of her wrath id like to give him/her a second chance but you cant help thinking about what its done

Hey! come on, this is not a dog attack right?, she is hardly gong to do it again, let the shock wear off a little, I am sure she will love being an only bird. If you do get another, keep them seperate, and dont let them both out at the same time. From what I have read on here, it is normal behaviour, even if it is abhorrent to us humans.

James, here's the thing; you can't go back. Olive can't go back. None of us can go back. We can only go forward. Try and keep hold of the fact that Olive just did what she had to do. She's got little biological urges and impulses, and a little birdie brain, and she's done the thing that birds sometimes will do, are known to do. I'm sure it was no picnic for her either.

Regarding a "second chance" for Olive, I would say, No; do not give her a second chance to kill by caging her with another bird. If you meant a "second chance" for something else, maybe your love, or living in your house, this is just your grief and frustration talking. The killing of Emmy was not a transgression, not something we punish or condone. It is without either negative or positive moral value, simply just is something that happened.

Now you mourn, and then you pick up your emotional pieces and be glad you didn't lose both your birds. You go on. Olive must go on, too, and she must now do it alone, as the sole member of her species in her piece of the world. It's really sad, so sad, for everyone. Please don't hold a grudge against Olive for doing a natural thing.

Sympathetically,
-MissK
