What am I, recessive or a dominant Pied

Post by Hassan Alam »

Hi All,

Please note that I have recently added a female pied IRN of which I do not have any details on the parentage. I would really want to know if the bird can visually be identified if it is a dominant pied or a ressive pied and suggestions on its pairing. I am adding a few photos of its eyes, toes, flight, back side of the head and tail if that can help for identification.

I agree, I'd go with recessive pied based on the pied cap on the head.

Is a pied cap a give away for recessives? or are there other identifications as well?

For ADM rec. pieds males don't get a neckring and following the holly bible of Mr. Bastiaan they should show dark red eyes with translucent iris. But i have learned that this isn't always the case. Even if the birds live in SA. :) So i would go for rec. pied too (SA resp. Hillermann type).

Hi Madas, thankyou! so now that we are sure its a Rec. pied, I will have to get it DNA'd if this is actually a female! right?

If it is a ADM rec. pied then normally couldn't tell if it is female or male. So a DNA is needed.
There is another rec. pied mutation in OZ. Males of this mutation are showing parts of a ringneck. Paul from Indian Ringneck Vic could post pics of his male if he likes.

Well, you said it is a hen, and it looks like a hen too. Is there reason to doubt this?

Hi Hassan, I thought from your first post you were sure already. Absolutely no problem with having it sexed if you are unsure. Go for it.
