Bird won't stop trying to escape cage or eat food from it

Post by teurenui »

I have just hand reared my first IRN and he is not 9 weeks old, fledged and well on his way to being completely weaned. How ever when ever anybody is present in the room of his cage he is constantly fluttering about frantically trying to escape his more than adequately large and hospitable cage. I think it may be because he is not weaned to the point where he eats food other than things I have given him and I have not fed him in his cage so he doesn't associate his cage with anything but sleep which makes it a redundant boring place. I don't know how to solve the weaning issue or the cage issue. PLEASE HELP!

he doesn't see the cage as a safe zone and he's not use to daily activity

he'll adapt.... gotta figure out stuff he likes and turn this bad experience into a positive one by giving him special treats when he's upset like that..

simple rule of thumb is that if it upsets the bird, then use bribery (food/toys) to teach him it's a good thing

He's getting mildly better today now that I've put the cage in a higher position and have been only giving him food as he returns to it. He still get's a bit crazy if there are people near the cage and he hasn't been out of it a while and will try to poke his head out and follow them as they move around it. Is there such thing as over socialized/compulsive socialisers in birds?
