A hole load of questions for you pro ringneck lovers

Post by fifi and olive »

Hello fellow ringneck lovers...
I am new to the ringnecks, I had a Kakariki before but he was no were near as demanding.
I did really want a hand raised baby, but I was out at a garden centre one day and I saw my two little babies in a aviary looking quite scared. so been the softie I am had to have them and fatten them up :).
I have read threw just about all the pages on here its took a while and my boyfriend keeps asking how much can I possibly need to know about them, i'm just so interested in my new little friends and want them to have the best life's like I see your birds on here do.
The centre that sold them me said I could ring at any time for advice but I feel that when I call they just try to say anything that doesn't lead back to them and not actually to help the birds,so my questions for any advice or help are... (get ready ha)
Fifi is around 9 months old and female.
olive is around 1 year old and is suppose to be female.
- fifi gets out of breath very quickly when flying around, she doesn't constantly sit with her beak open but does pant heavy if she has been on a big fly around. the pet shop man said it was because she wasn't use to the exercise but olive doesn't loose breath so quick.
-fifi's beak has got ridges in it and he was just scraping it with a blade and said it was due to too much calcium?
-fifi's tail only very slightly has gone a bit thin on the end, they have a huge cage and are always out and have toys ect so i just didn't want it to get worse? as i say it only a small amount about the end cm but i am a worrier ha
-olive who is a female, supposedly -_- is developing black feathers under the beak not a ring just only under the beak? do females get this ever or do black feathers defiantly indicate she's a he?
-both there eyes are blood shot in there whites? they get allot of sleep but I did have wood chipping's in the bottom that iv replaced with newspaper and a bowl of sand ? does any one know what this could be.
and FINALLY advise on getting there wings clipped. I love that they can fly free and i love there beautiful wings so I don't want to how ever at the min the don't need me for anything so are quite impossible to train, and if get over excited can fly into things or if are tried to be caught to put away and I don't want them to get injured.
i will be taking them to a vets soon but I am trying to get some advise on a good one for birds as im new to the area and have herd lots of bad stories at vets if they don't specialise in birds. also I would just like your opinions as what i read on here you give allot of good positive advice and help to us beginners that are lets say not as experienced ha! thanks for any help from fifi, olive and Sarah the one who typed this essay ha.

Hi fifi and olive,

You must wait a little until you can put up a photo - ironic. Sorry about that.

I don't know so much about beaks, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to hear there was a nutrition problem where they were living before. I know vitamin deficiency can cause beak trouble, but I can't tell if that's your situation. I would have expected an aviary-kept bird to have gotten enough exercise to fly comfortably, but the bird could be fat or out of shape, especially if the diet was poor. If it were me, I'd go back to the place and inspect the food - get a sample to take home and analyze if possible. About the black feathers under the chin - I guess there are always possibilities that things are not as they most obviously seem, but............... good thing "olive" is a fruit, and as such could be either a boy or girl name.

Best wishes,

Thanks loads for your help so far, any additional info would be great too,
I seam to have spent the last 5 months of my life none stop research threw all the web sights and calling people about them but as everybody has such different opinions on things I just thought I would personally ask you clever parrot people and see what you guys could come up with. hopefully when you can see the baby birdies it will help answer some questions... did you have advice on travelling them?

I'm desperate to get as many different points of view about things that's why this forum is so good.

thanks again olive fifi and Sarah
