Re: raw hides normally for dog, yes or no?

Yes, I'm aware of that. I'm just speaking about the vine though, whether it has any toxicities etc?

Re: Indian Ringneck Beak flaking

Have a look at my comment on this thread although pictures are definitely necessary.
As a Veterinary Nurse (Wildlife) I'd recommend taking it to an avian vet ASAP. Anything to do with beaks in birds is detrimental to their health.

Re: Low fat gone overboard

Hi, I'm not sure if this can be applicable to your situation but as I'm studying Veterinary Nursing (specialising in Wildlife) I just recently learned about something called Beacon Feather Disease. I'm unsure if your birds go outside and have any contact at all with wild birds but this is a very com...

Re: raw hides normally for dog, yes or no?

Speaking of grape vines, is it possibly okay for my bird to eat grapes off the vine? They've been washed and he loves to have a mung on a few grapes but he also loves chewing on the vine for some enrichment. Is this okay? :D P.s. Zeus has grown up really well and is a very happy boy. Hasn't yet real...

Re: The ring ???

Not sure whether you found the answer to this but its a method of identification and in most cases, how you register your pet. Rather then having a microchip or tattoo, its how we identify that an animal is either a pet or wild. Use the numbers on the band to register your bird so if it ever escapes...

Re: Baby bird problems-please help.

As for the growling, and the handling. Handle it basically as much as possible. 20 minutes 5x a day should be enough but as it gets older try to bump up the amount of time you spend with it. Ensure you teach it your voice and remember not to stare it in the eyes, for a young bird, its very stressful...

Re: Baby bird problems-please help.

I agree with Jim. Try feeding more regularly throughout the day if you have the chance to, just like us humans, birds should eat smaller portions throughout the day, rather than one big feed at once (unless you're a raptor). I have hand-reared a combination of different birds, including Tawny Frogmo...

purple monkey dishwasher

I'm sorry for lying to you all, unforunately, this is not a thread about a purple monkey dishwasher. It is, however, about the colour purple. Pretty simply really, is it okay for our IRN's to eat purple vegetables --> sweet potato, dutch carrots, beetroot...? I know they're all basically considered ...

Giving Zeus a new friend

Hello all, Zeus has become an amazing bird. If any of you had read my earlier posts, he was a parent-raised aviary bird, which myself and my partner have managed to convert to a friendly pet. Zeus still doesn't let us pat him on the back of his neck (if at all), however he basically lets us do every...

Funny experiences...

Wanted to make a thread about funny experiences you've had with your IRN, or other bird. Today I fed Zeus some orange, he gave it a small lick. Then took off a chunk. And after a couple of seconds for the flavour to hit.. He shook his head ferociously for about a minute, with little breaks in betwee...

Re: New IRN - Am I doing it right?

Fantastic. Please do not apologise about the long reply, its thorough, which is really helpful. And just to clarify, I did mean "unfortunately" for the bird. I love my animals more than anything. He's just a bit too playful and rough for Zeus  I will definitely have to try some of tho...

Re: New IRN - Am I doing it right?

MissK - thanks! I've never really looked at the glove or the clipping in that way before, and perhaps I just might try to hold off on the clipping until he builds that trust with me. The main reason why I don't want him to fly is because my house isn't what you'd call "pet friendly", there...

To trim, or not to trim...

I want to start hand-taming Zeus, and he's started off okay. Minimal biting and seems to be responding to my voice. He flys around a fair bit however, and I'm scared one day he'll hurt himself flying into a wall or something. I initially wanted to trim his wings but now I'm unsure of whether to do t...

Re: New IRN - Am I doing it right?

Okay great, I might try and use my hands tomorrow. I'm just so scared of getting bitten haha. Not sure if you read that he wasn't hand reared but yeah, since handling him today he hasnt seemed to bite us yet, has a little nibble but I think he's just testing us a bit, seeing if the glove was food or...

Re: New IRN - Am I doing it right?

Just wanted to update with some news. I rolled Zeus into my bedroom this morning to watch my boyfriend sleep in (lucky). When I got home at about 4.30pm, my boyfriend put on a glove and let Zeus climb onto his hand - we didn't want to grab him in case he then later associated hands as a bad thing. M...

Re: Getting my Ringneck more used to me

Bumping for interest. I would also like to handle my bird like this in the future.
I imagine it would work by rewarding the bird with your other hand at first and then expanding it out to petting being the reward. I'm not too sure though.

Re: New IRN - Am I doing it right?

I also thought that it was quite unique, I work in the animal industry in a captive fascility and I've never seen nor heard of it, but then again, it seemed to work for him. :? When my cockatiel was a lot younger, I did the step up method and he used to sit on my hand and shoulder however he was alw...

Re: New IRN - Am I doing it right?

Thank you for your help, I will definitely take that all into consideration. I have been whistling before I enter the room and he seems to have adjusted to that as he doesn't flip out anymore when I appear out of no where. I've also left his doors open to get him used to the idea of coming out of hi...

New IRN - Am I doing it right?

Hello all, first post :) Picked up my beautiful blue IRN today, he's about 2 months old at this point and had been handled everyday since hatching, however he wasn't hand reared and isn't very hand tamed either. Extremely healthy looking bird with awesome feathers and the length of his tail feathers...
