Re: Jealousy
I have tried every method out there to step up. He will go out of his way to avoid step up, Training one on one, alone is a great idea but Billie is so OVERLY BONDED to Captain that he flips out and won't stay put if Captain is not in the area, so I'll try what you suggested - close proximity. thanks.

Jealousy
I haven't been on this site for 2 years and now, in addition to my ringneck, I also have a Blue Crown Conure,Captain, 26 years old, super sweet. The ringneck, Billie (bad to the bone), 27 years old, has become SUPER jealous to the point of attacking and biting me. I now spend more time with him and ...

Re: Behavior
Yes, he has wonderful foraging skills, smart as a whip, obeys just about anything we want him to do with the offer of a treat and did step up to us when we were interviewing him at the aviary but only for a few seconds and then took off. I would bet he knows very well how to do it but is still very ...

Re: Behavior
No, he is 20 years old and has just come thru THE most horrible Hormonal Breeding Behavior for 4 months! and then went right into Moulting. He's very lethargic and just wants to be left alone. Which I respect. He came from the Gabriel Foundation. a bird rescue (there for 4 years). I know he is still...

Back again.........
Now my IRN WILL NOT step up at all.
He will step up to a perch on the table but NO PHYSICAL CONTACT.
Unless you count biting viciously.

Re: Hormonal behavior
After what I was sure was a hopeless situation - I'm happy to report that Billy made a MAJOR breakthrough today. He flew and landed on my shoulder not once but twice. Stayed for a little bit and accepted a treat. Vocalized loudly and then moved on. I'm deliriously happy. Hopefully this is the beginn...

Re: Hormonal behavior
Billie is a 20 year old rescue bird of unknown handling background. I did increase his foraging opportunities but he goes thru them relatively fast and then goes back to spending the day throwing up on everything "feeding". I let him out and he does the same on outside items, especially mi...

Hormonal behavior
Actually this post is really continuing about Billie's aggressive behavior - pretty much the same as my last post. I know he is still hormonal but is it usual for him to be trying to attack me? If I get him on my arm, he continues to bite all the way up my arm to my shoulder and then goes for my nec...

Re: Aggressive behavior
Yes, I was just at the Gabriel but one of the people confirmed that he is indeed in the middle of hormones, given the behavior I described to you earlier and that perhaps the mirror intro just kicked it off...December to February. They laughed about hormonal birds, I don't find it quite that amusing...

Re: Aggressive behavior
Before I let you go, what is your opinion of wing clipping. I had a Cockatoo that really calmed down and became a whole different bird after trimming and then a cockatiel (24 years!) who was always fully flighted and was fine. I love my birds as hands-on as possible. My IRN is very independent and h...

Re: Aggressive behavior
Yes, I pretty much agree with you. I have to wait to see what the Foundation says. And my husband. And do I really want another possible problem child?

Re: Aggressive behavior
Annie was his cagemate at the Gabriel Foundation aviary. We live about a mile from it. We often volunteer there because we are retired, me because of M.S. (27 years still on my feet), husband just because its time. I don't wait around for the bite - if I see pinning, I'm away from him. Seriously, 110?

Re: Aggressive behavior
Again, wonderful advice. The only problem is, i do get him away from the cage to interact, like stepping up, and he just pins his eyes ready for a bite. Even with treats. You mentioned only into half of his life. I thought they only lived 25-30 years. Although Anniie, I'm told, is 40. I was going to...

Re: Aggressive behavior
o.k., this question goes to more of same. New behavior this morning is that he was out on the table and sat very low, lifted one foot an began ducking his head up and down and followed that up with more "heart shaping" and then was very aggressively protecting a pair of sun glasses on the ...

Re: Aggressive behavior
Stationing sounds a little complex for him right now but I frequently underestimate him. Good advice. As far as the birdy friend, I would love to do that - in fact, he had a female sharing the cage with him at the aviary. I was hesitant to take him away from her because she is older and I was afraid...

Re: Aggressive behavior
oh yes, thanks for asking. His very favorite is almonds, followed by birdie bread, grapes, nutriberries, apples, sunflower seeds (used sparingly) and he loves coming to the table and helping himself after our meals.

Re: Aggressive behavior
Thanks...sounds like a good idea but the problem is that he spends a lot of time at the shiny latch to his door and the stainless food dishes. Before I replace everything, I am a seamstress and thought I would try hanging a fabric "curtain" in front of the dishes. I know the key is to redi...

Aggressive behavior
HELP! I have adopted a 17 year old IRN from a well known Aviary/Sanctuary in Colorado. His history is unknown because he was brought to the aviary by a good samaritan. I have had a Cockatiel for 24 years and a Cockatoo for 10. Both are gone so I am not new to caring for birds. My problem is, "B...
