Broken Nail

He cracked it playing around, no blood, but plenty of crying. Does this look like it needs to go to a vet? Hes flying about happy but is obviously trying to keep weight off it (he did it 12hrs ago). Here are the pics http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu154/iankewley/frontnail.jpg http://i643.photob...

cats :(

I hate cats, so I'd like a balancing view from any owners of both birds and cats. I have a couple of cats that hang about my yard; I think they stare through the glass doors at the birds during the day too. They pretty much prevent me from putting the birds out unattended (ie with me 10feet away doi...

Sigh...well it's done. I had to wait till nightfall, dim the lights and hang about innocently before snatching her from her 'sleeping branch'......setting taming efforts back months (she has a looong memory). Last chance came today when she attacked him on my shoulder. I suspect I am the problem and...

I wonder if a couple of the ring feathers came through in the last major moult and you'll get more next time. Does it work like this? Maybe someone will know. Interestingly the ring feathers on my 8ish month Alexandrine are yellow except for the tips (green), the rest of his body feathers are grey/w...

Thanks, I think you are right, I can't wait it out in case either bird lands a bad hit. Sadly if I cage the IRN it will have to be permanent (she's lived free for 6mths because she can't be handled, a hassle but she keeps to her tree and makes little mess). There won't be any exercise because she ca...

More fighting

After a quiet spell my female IRN has started going bezerk about her territory and attacking the Alex. Apparently everywhere except the sofa belongs to her. It's full on 'build her self up', fuzzy head, pin eyes then a suicidal charge. I say this because shes flying into him with all her might. Wher...

Plucking IRN - Vets online/by mail?

Does anyone know of an online or by-mail Avian Vet? My friend has a likely male IRN which is plucking to the skin. We've looked at all the behavioural and life pattern reasons for plucking but obviously the first place you should start is with a vet...we're on the edge of the Middle East and we can'...

Do Alexandrines calm down as they get older?

Alexs are well known for how tame they can be, I think I saw them described once as 'confiding' My question is for those with older birds...do they slow down a bit and become a bit less 'needy' and chewy after the first year? I know having a 'cuddly tame' bird is a godsend but it would be nice if he...

Mites and Worms

Could someone tell me the basics of mites and worms? A quick rummage around the site gave lots of specific questions but not the basics. Should I be regularly mite spraying as a routine? My birds don't go outside but I do open mesh covered windows...do mites get in or are they everywhere anyway? Is ...

Cheap toys for ringnecks

I don't have access to proper pet stores or mail order so I have to make do with alternates, heres a few I found really good: Duplo or Lego (or equivalents): Build the bird a little castle and he will spend hours dismantling, then chewing the blocks into shards. Little packs of the toddler stuff cos...

Hi, Although there are people more experienced than me on here, I recently read up heavily on bluffing and I'll try to offer you something. It's very possible if your bird was very young in Jan that it fits the development timescale for 'bluffing'. If so you are being bitten by a bird acting perfect...

New foods

After a bit of rummaging on the internet I'm looking for more foods that make the birds lose their normal sense of caution. So far I have (I have Asian continent shops): Sugar cane - not sure they 'eat' but they turn it to dust Chillis, pungent is better than hot e.g. Nandi Popcorn (thanks Bec) Swee...

What do these these behaviour patterns mean?

Hi, I mentioned elsewhere that I'm hopelessly trying to tame a very wild female (roughly 9-10mths). I wonder if any of you recognise these behaviour patterns so I can tell if I'm getting anywhere after about 8 months (!!!!). I'm on the lookout for new ideas having exhausted all the ones I have. I of...

There seems to be a real knack to knowing the times when you have the birds full attention and the speech training is having most effect against when they are distracted and just want to chew things up. Can I ask for your experiences of when your Alexs' started to talk? Mines 6 months now, I hand reared from 3 weeks so he's my best pal (which as an Alex is a mixed blessing...he'll sit cuddling but all he really wants is to chew the objects I use the most...1k in damage so far). He repeats both the ...

I think my 9mth female has an IQ of about 140 thats all devoted to beating the systems I put in place. At one stage I would have 'penelope pitstop' strings attached to cage doors and lie in wait. Same

Terry, I have had similar issues with an IRN and Alex who fight if left in the same cage (cage size has never helped). Its not a species issue (they should be fine) and they are male female. My problem is the serious attitude of the near-feral IRN who tries unsuccessfully to bully the very tame Alex...

Hi, One note to this (great) sticky: Some modern gadgets - phones, PDAs are being coated in TEFLON as a premium product feature. It's done to prevent fingerprints etc on the gadget. Hi new joiner

Hi, I'm new to the forum, I have a female (or at least as far as I know!) IRN aged about 9mths and a male (ditto) Alex aged 6mths. The IRN was a rescue bird, possibly a trapped wild bird. She's happy now but far from tame. I hand reared the Alex so they make an odd pair. I've been in other forums bu...
