Re: Alex all grown up
My greenie started getting pink feathers around his neck about 18 months old but the black ones haven't really started coming in - he turns 2 in May.

Re: First time with IRN's
My IRN loves almonds in the shell - I crack it just a little but he does most of the work. It's fun to watch him - his eyes flash and you can see him trying to figure out how to get to the nut. He also loves peanuts in the shell. These birds are so intelligent and need stimulation and challenge just...

Re: taming problem
How do I get my IRN boy to step up to begin with? He completely avoids fingers except if I am jingling his favorite whiffle ball(he will beak my finger gently) or we give him food. He will step up to a wooden perch(unless he's being really stubborn, the perch usually comes out when we are trying to ...

I gave Krishna a couple of pieces of caramel corn and it was one of the first things he would take from my hand - I would give it to him rarely though. Can't see why plain popcorn would be a problem.

My 1yo IRN does the same thing when I shake his rattle ball - he is fascinated with those things - I think it's a mating dance but not sure - perfectly normal though.

Re: Very disappointed with my new IRN ;(
Another bit of encouragement - Krishna just took some food from my hand for the first time - through the bars of the cage, but it is a step in the right direction. It has taken a year but finally our little green friend is starting to trust us - don't give up! I am guilty of basing my opinion of IRN...

Re: Very disappointed with my new IRN ;(
I am curious if your baby is from the same breeder as mine(in MD) - sounds like how mine acted when he first arrived a year ago(and for a long time afterward). She says that the birds are handfed but my IRN is still afraid of hands(though he is gradually less so), he acts as though he was not social...

finally my IRN isn't biting me :)
My 1yr old IRN male has been scared and bitey ever since we have had him. He has always been afraid of hands even though he was handfed and won't step up to anyone's finger, only to a handheld perch. The other day I saw a video where someone stopped their parrot from biting by putting some sweet syr...

Re: Krishna is Krazy about Kranberries!
I saw your username and I was wondering if you were in NZ - I was taking a look at the kakapo breeding project website this morning - what precious, amazing birds they are! Try the dried cranberries - I think even here the fresh ones are only available around fall/Thanksgiving time so when the seaso...

Any rec's for travel cages for boarding(not carriers)?
My husband and I are visiting my family for Christmas so I need to board Krishna at the vet's office for 5 days. They told me to bring his cage but it is too big to take there. Has anyone tried the collapsible travel cages - they sell them at windycityparrot.com? Any other recommendations? I like th...

Re: Am losing hope with my IRN Krishna
Thanks for the tips Melika - will try the two dowel trick and only giving him his favorite foods if he is near me. I need to buy him a play stand that I can put on the bed or table - most of the ones I have seen look like they are for budgies or tiels. I just found out he loves cranberries so can us...

Krishna is Krazy about Kranberries!
I bought a bag of cranberries this weekend and they are Krishna's new favorite. I used to think apples were his favorite but he usually takes a bite or 2 of a piece of apple before dropping it on the floor. Today I gave him 8 cranberries and he ate every one. If your fids haven't tried them already ...

Am losing hope with my IRN Krishna
I have had this little terror for 2 months now (he is exactly 5 months old today - his hatch date was May 29) and he doesn't want anything to do with anybody yet supposedly he was handfed. He has all the toys and treats a bird could want, loads of love and attention but he almost always sits with hi...

Re: EMERGENCY!!!! HELP!
I remember reading that tip in a bird first aid article a long time ago. The best thing to have on hand is styptic pencil(sold with shaving stuff at the drugstore) but you can use extra fine flour (Wondra) or cornstarch in an emergency to stop bleeding. Hope Yoshi is OK now! :) Styptic pencil/powde...

Question about wing trimming and taming
My 4 month old IRN Krishna is still very scared of people even though he was handfed. His wings were trimmed but he can still get some lift and fly out of our reach - for example if he is on top of his cage he can fly to the top of a room divider and from there under the radiator where I can't reach...

Re: Websites o order dried chili peppers?
I had an Alex girl before and she went nuts for the dried red chili peppers - when she saw them her pupils would dilate and she would just attack them - seemed to enjoy shredding them more than actually eating them though. Try a Mexican or Indian online grocery store like Patel Brothers. My little g...

Is my space heater bird safe?
I have a Holmes fan type space heater and am wondering if it is safe to use around my baby. I checked the Holmes website and it said they do not use non-stick coatings, also the site Avianweb has Amazon links suggesting Holmes heaters including the same model I have, but just thought I would ask if ...

Re: desperately need help
You are me - I have a 3.5month old male IRN(Krishna) who is behaving just as you describe. The breeder shipped him to me on Aug. 26. He was handfed so I don't know why he is so scared. In the first few days he would get scared even if anyone walked by his cage, also he acted like he was really depre...

Re: New scared IRN baby - how to gain his trust?
Yes, he is weaned - eating seeds, pellets and some fruit. He is still scared - whenever someone comes up to his cage he flies in the opposite direction. He is partially clipped but can still fly from the top of his cage to a room divider where I can't reach him. :x I am looking for an avian vet in m...

New scared IRN baby - how to gain his trust?
I just brought home a hand raised 3 month old green IRN male on Thursday - breeder shipped him to me so I was unable to meet the little guy beforehand. I have a lot of experience with birds and I have to say 'Krishna' is unlike any other handfed bird I have taken care of. He won't let anyone near hi...
