Re: greetings from new ringneck enthusiast
Breaking news! I just talked to the vet, and Neles dna test came back as a boy!!! I wonder if we need to change his name now? [/color] Yes, after reading your description of Nele's behaviour I am not surprised. Females are generally much more one-person birds. I have previously two males and they w...

Re: keeping 2 hand tame IRN's
Hi We have a 3 year-old female green called Spud and have just got a 3 month old baby albino that we are THINKING is male, but not really fussed either way. Still working on a name - Loki suits, but we are heading towards Floyd. Anyway, a bit off topic that bit, but I found this - now old - post reg...

Re: My 9mth IRN keeps on taking my glasses off HELP?!
I could be wrong but I don't think you can, at least permanently.
Every IRN I have had plays with my glasses and all I do is cover my ear with my whole hand and they leave them alone for a while. They will always go after them as the arms are great for chewing on...!

my IRN keeps having SEX with his/her perch!!!!!
It gets quite embarrassing!! The perch is a bendy-bar fabric thing but one end doesn't have the bar-end. Instead it is fluffy. The bird is nearly 1 year old, not sure whether male or female Tail tucks right under the perch with wing/shoulders out and vigorous rubbing and little noises. Three times i...

Right, finally an addition to this one. I have to bribe Ziggy with toast of all things to get him into the cage in the morning when I head off to work. No problems there. At night the same trick might work but I don't bother, I just trap him behind a perch so he can't get out and has to hop on it. W...

but they look sooo cuddly!!! but really Donna is right. Ziggy growls and squeaks when he doesn't want another hand near him. Sometimes I then just use a finger to gently pat his head otherwise I leave him alone. ...mind you, he also does it when he can't get his own way or get to a toy he loves (my ...

Right, I've started this one up again as Ziggy is still a nightmare to get to bed. Worst thing is he now knows the words - time for bed - and promptly hops off my hand onto my chest then snuggles up under my chin. How can I refuse that!! As soon as I get him back on my hand he leans forward, hangs u...

Nil is right - you want to get him used to your hands so avoid the towel if you can. Sometimes they don't mind (rarely), but generally I think most people only use it for clipping.
This will probably mean a few nips, but the bird has to learn that your hands won't hurt it.
Patience patience patience

How long have you had him/her? I got Max at 5 months and took loads and loads and loads and loads ...etc... of work. However every day was an improvement and every month - or sometimes less - was a MAJOR improvement. Don't give up. Never really going to be as cuddly (potentially) as a hand-reared (a...

Hi, I mentioned in a post a few weeks ago that when my mother went to talk to Ziggy (well, made clicking sounds really) he sort of went all mental, seemed to lunge at her and started calling but not calling. Hard to describe - sort of shouting at her really. I thought he was going to attack her. How...

If he wasn't hand-reared you will just have to be patient and keep trying, but gradually. Let him get to really trust your hands. Sometimes they just don't like to be patted/stroked, but patient work might get you there. Have a trawl around the forum, there are plenty of comments on this type of thi...

Indeed the wings are not clipped, best to go to an avian vet or specialist pet shop. A lot of people on this forum don't have a lot of nice things to say about pet shops overseas, but here it seems a bit different (NZ). Don't know where you are based somewhere cold by the sounds, so obviously NH. If...

Might take a couple of days for Tango to realise that things aren't the way they used to be. The other thing is, when they can't fly properly they become dependent on you for a lot of transport around the house - so make the most of it, cart Tango around with you at every opportunity. This will help...

Really... clip the wings. They just take over as boss otherwise. And the worst thing is that they will fly away no matter how tame they are and how safe you believe them to be. Speaking from experience here - my Max only had 2 flight feathers and buggered off when he got a fright. believe me, they d...

firstly, tango is only a baby, so you wouldn't want him/her to react - you don't want a pre-teen pregnancy on your hands! Would a random parrot take care of the babies? etc etc etc... I used to leave Max with my parents when I went away. That way he had no choice!! He would have been a similar age to Oliver when I started doing that (18 months?). my opinion only (well, not mine alone as someone else suggested it), but I agree about the mirror thing. I have always been of the opinion that it is like another bird to them and they will talk to it cos it responds in kind every time, and in the end it will give the mirror more attention than you.
