Acquired a new chick and curious as to which mutation it is

Hi everyone

I recently bought a 3 month old chick with colouring I haven't seen before and was wondering if experienced breeders might help identify the mutation.

I do not have pics of him/her yet so any suggestions of which parts of the bird I should photograph for identification would be appreciated.

What I can tell so far is this: I bought it from a breeder that had to stop breeding IRN's for personal reasons and from what he told me the hen was lutino and the cock white (I did not get to see the parents). The chick, however, has red eyes which confuses me.

Kind regards

Wessel Gordon

Albino, Lutino, Pallid, Cinnamon ect all hatch with red eyes with then turn darker, then lighten up to blue.

What does your chick look like? from two Ino parents- it can only be Ino itself

Sheyd,

The chick has a white head and body, with silver on the wings and "cinnamon"/light brown on the flight feathers.

I'm not all that sure about all the right terminology for the various body-parts but I hope my explanation makes sense.

OK, did my best with a camera-shy/skittish bird. I'm just waiting for the software to download that I need to download the pic from my phone then I'll post it on this thread.

I just tried to download the picture to this site but I keep getting the message that the file is too big.

With all my unsuccessful picture taking today I did notice that the chick's eyes are starting to darken. I did get a nice shot showing his/her back (including tail-feathers) if you want me to email that to you as well. I already e-mailed you the best of the previous bunch I took.

pic for wesselgordon:

It could possibly be a Grey PallidIno +/- Cinnamon, which would make the sire a PallidIno too (if true)- what were the nest siblings?

Thanks for the upload of the picture.

The siblings I saw had a similar body colour with the head the same colour as my bird's body. The only difference was that they had lutino (yellow) patches over the wings and back which is obviously lacking in this bird.

As mentioned in an earlier post I did manage to get a shot showing it's back and colour a bit more clearly.

I forgot to ask in my previous post: if it is a grey pallidino +/- cinnamon will it develop a ring if it's male?

Yes to your Q. a brown/black faint neckring

Your bird being young could also be just a grey pallid (hard to tell from that pic) (some grey pallids are almost white when young) & the other sibling you described could be a turquoiseBlue ?grey? pallid

If INO is involved the other could be pallidino turquoise male.

So it's possible that the chick will change into it's true colour over time?

I do have a shot showing the back, wings and tail but I keep on getting messages that the image is too big.

Molossus,

It did have red eyes when it was younger but they are turning black.

Madas,

A lacewing being a bird that has a lighter coloured wing than the rest of the bird?

Until proven otherwise is that a sex-linked mutation?

Shey,

look at this thread
http://www.indianringneck.com/forum/vie ... mon+pallid

my take
for sure it is a grey pallid
possibly + INO

shame there were no Cinnamon PallidIno's in that thread-- I wouldn't rule it out for Wessel's bird just yet?

if you're interested, have a look at this bird- (scroll down for the user SP) what do you think it is?

Wessel
three (potential) sex-linked mutations: Cinnamon, Ino and Pallid.
..........

Those feet look very, very pink for just Pallid?

So to be sure about the sex either wait two years or have it checked by a vet?

You could get it surgically sexed- I prefer the dna sexing (drop of blood from toe) as less evasive- though surgically sexing has its pros

Thanks Shey

In a town about 50 miles from here there's a garden centre with birds that regularly gets an avian vet for consultations with breeders/owners. He sexes IRN's by putting them to sleep and then pushing an endoscope into a specific spot between the wings. Not sure if that's the procedure you refer to as "surgically sexing".

Will have to find out when his next visit is but he's usually fully booked in advance so you have to be on your toes about getting an appointment with him.

Just a quick update.

The above bird has been surgically sexed as male on the 24th of July.

Not yet. Unfortunately he looks a bit scruffy right now due to being caught by hand by me and the vet but if you are willing to overlook that I can see what I can come up with.

Is there any areas of the bird that I should concentrate on when trying to take pics?

I found another bird on Facebook that looks incredibly like mine (the bird in front in this pic). The only difference is that mine does not have the blue on the upper part of the tail.
