Congrats on your babies!!!!
They are so cute!!! It makes me wish breeding season would hurry up and come here! I miss having all my babies to feed and care for but its always heartbreaking to see them go to their new homes I am happy when people keep me updated on how they are doing though

Congrats! Soooo tiny!

You should check whether the remaining eggs are fertile by candling them. I normally leave them even if infertile, as I believe they help keep the chicks warm if/when the hen leaves the nest. The time between hatching differs depending on whether the hen started incubating early or late. If she started incubating the eggs before she completed the clutch, they normally hatch about a day or two apart. If she started incubating late, the eggs hatch closer to one another. I find the second scenario better, as the early chicks rapidly outgrow the late ones, and the late ones die very easily if not helped.

3rd baby just hatched!

Congrats on your 3rd baby!!!

Breeding season in South Africa is normally between September and end of November. Last year I had an early batch though, in late August. It's so exciting to go to the aviaries and see the eggs and then when they start hatching I am like a proud mom, I can't contain myself!!!!

Johan S is right though with babies hatching late. My 1 albino hen laid 6 eggs last year. When five of them hatched I thought there was no way the last 1 would hatch but it did a week and a half later after the first baby!!!! By the time I saw it though it had been squashed under the others I have decided in future if any of my hens have more than 5 eggs I am going to take the excess eggs away and put them with a hen who has less eggs that goes down at more or less the same time as I don't have an incubator.

All the best with the new babies. Hope some more hatch but 3 is a good number for a first clutch

Hi Carmen, glad to see another SA aviculturist on the board. 2 comments:

1) Our breeding season depends on the location. My dad stays in the Southern Cape area in the coastal region, and he regularly has birds starting in July already! Quite amazing, I think. He also has quite a number of pairs starting early August. Unfortunately, the land locked inlanders with the harsher winters typically start much later, towards middle/end August, as you have pointed out.

2) A solution to large clutches is to replace the eggs early on with "false eggs". You can make these eggs from clay and colour them white. Store the real eggs someplace safe at about 25 degrees Celsius. Then, once the hen has finished laying, replace the false eggs with the real eggs. This way, the incubation period starts at the same time for all the eggs and the chicks should hatch within a day or two of one another. Just be sure to get the eggs early. Alternatively, use an incubator and replace the false eggs much later, close to the time that they are expected to hatch.

We checked to see if it was fertile, and the egg shell was VERY thick. Poor thing couldn't hatch! So I had to help it along...

Oh, that poor little guy. I'm glad you were able to rescue him. I hope he grows big and strong!

@blueindianringneck: 5/5 chicks is a very good result, I'm sure you are very pleased! The youngest chick is a very small compared to the oldest. You'll need to monitor it closely over the next week. Hopeful the parents can keep up with the feeding, but if not, you'll need to assist. Good luck. This post has got me stoked for our next breeding season, to bad it is still months away.

YES! Their growing and all being fed so far. We ck at morning, afternoon and before bed. If we see any sign of trouble we'll pull some to help her feed.

baby #3 just wasn't big enough

Okay, epic fail. We were told to pull them to put bands on at 9-10 days old. They fell off. We'll wait a bit.

I think it to late. A good sign for the right time on banding the chicks is then they open thier eyes (small slot). Htis is around day 12-13.

Madas is right. Ring necks are rung at two weeks of age. It's been a while since I bred with ring necks so I will have to brush up on my routine.

From L&M bands we bought size 10. The oldest has his right eye open as of yesterday! They are getting so big!

lol okay! How old until you can pull to hand feed?

21 days are fine. This will give mom a chance to recoup. I think the problem you face is the age gap of the five. If the youngest chick is too small it may be better to pull it as the others start hogging the feed. You will pick this up thru observing the crop and it's stunting growth. If it's ok pull as advised at three weeks.

Yes, I was concerned that he might be having problems, but each time we look he is well fed. It's just a shock seeing the size difference lol.

i always put my rings on at 10 days old and check the next day to see if they have slipped off i would never leave it till 12 days before putting rings on just incase they wont fit you must remember not all chicks grow at the same the first one always grows a lot quicker than others so once you have rung the first bird put the other birds rings on one day after another till they are all done

Been on holiday so haven't had a decent internet connection but your babies are looking sooo good!!!!
They have grown so quickly, they change a little bit every day and they are such little miracles. Congrats on all 5 eggs hatching
I ring my babies between 10-12 days depending on size as there is an age gap between babies. I also use a 7mm ring for ringnecks.

I've also been on holiday and offline, and agree: great to see many SA birdlovers here. There are now enough so that I'm getting confused as to who is situated where. This morning was freezing on the Highveld, so it seems as if winter is very early this year.
