Difference between DF voilet and Cobalt

Post by Lyng1965 »

I read one of the posts on a previous
Thread that said you have to be careful buying a violet Cobalt as they very similar to the DF voilet is there an easy way to tell??
Also which would be the better one to buy

It depends what you want to breed out of the birds.

If you want to breed Violets then the DF Violet would be my option.
DF violet Blue with a Blue partner will give you 100% Violet Blue Babys.

If you want to breed the dark factor then the cobalt Violet would be my option .

In saying that I would still choose the DF Violet Blue and then get a dark blue partner and breed 50 % Violet Blue and 50 % Violet Dark Blue

Well that my 2 cents worth any way

There's a better way to buy a Cobalt-Violet or df violet without attempting to only visually identify it.
Ask the breeder:
what were the parents? & the other siblings in the nest?
how did he identify this bird as violet-coblat or df violet??
ask for a pic if possible

*If he has enough basic knowledge of genetics he will answer the 2 questions without hesitation.
You can come back here and tell us what he/she said.

As far as your second question, given you already have a df violet green to pair it to go for violet-cobalt
you will still get df violets + also df violet cobalt added to the mix!

Thanks Ben,
Both of the birds we looked at didn't have any history other than the breeder they people got them off said they were.
