Hello, all!

Post by jaimmorr »

Hi, everyone! My name is Jaime. I live in the USA and I am 18 years old. I'm very interested in Indian Ring Neck parrots. I think they are beautiful and seem to be extremely intelligent. I am just now getting started on my adventure, but I am a person who tries to know everything there is to know about something before going out and buying one. (I did 3 years of research on Chihuahuas before getting mine haha) I have always wanted a bird, but my mother hated them so I could never get one. Now that I'm out on my own, I am excited to get started on the research and preparation! So, hello, everyone and thanks for welcoming me to your community!

Ariahna wrote:Welcome Jaime. You are off to a good start by doing your research. Do you have any bird pet stores near you that have young Indian Ringnecks that you can visit? There is a lot of good information on this website and others that describe them very well. I am a new bird owner myself, and after a lot of research I chose an IRN for my first bird. I know they can be a challenge, especially during bluffing and hormone times, but as long as you know what to expect, and know how to handle it, you should be fine.

There is also this great forum where you can come and ask questions and share your experiences with other IRN owners. Please keep us posted, and when you do get your bird we would love to see pictures. :D

Hi, Ariahna! Thank you. No, I do not have any stores near me that sell Indian Ringnecks. :[ The only thing the one in town sells is Cockatiels, Parakeets, and a few Conures. They do have big Macaws in the back but they aren't for sale, just for show. They only have baby Cockatiels that they hand rear, though. I'm not sure about out of town, though. I am very excited reading about IRNs. They seem like such awesome birds. And of course, I will most likely go picture crazy! Haha. Right now I have 3 dogs (a Chihuahua, a Min Pin, and a Pittie mix), a double rex rat, and a bearded dragon. :]

Of course I wouldn't trade P.J. in for anything, I absolutely love him. He is not aggressive with other birds, and he loves playing with my dog which is a papillon. I would caution you though about the dogs, you will need to watch them carefully at all times when your bird is out of the cage. Even if they don't mean to hurt a bird they can very easily and quickly. Dogs instinctively chase birds, especially when they hear the noise of flapping wings, they can't really help it. So just be careful. :)
Oh, yes I would definitely really watch them! I've been browsing around this site for awhile and I'm kind of confused because there are some people who say these are the sweetest birds and then there are some who say they are aggressive... Any thoughts? :/

He is so pretty! I know that I want a bird, I'm just trying to establish what bird would be best for me right now. I really like IRNs, but I'm a little threatened by this "bluffing" stage. What is the minimum size requirement for their cage out of curiosity?

HI there
Ringnecks are great pets, they are very very smart. Mine is really affectionate but he doesn't talk - apparently sometimes you'll get one that doesn't. But he does talk in his own way - he has special noises for things! The key is to make sure you are getting a hand-reared bird. They are obviously used to being handled and socialised with humans. You need to make sure you can spend time with your bird everyday because they are really social and they also need a lot of stimulation. Be aware that the bigger the bird, the longer they live. Ringnecks can live for more than 30 years so its quite a big commitment to make and its really sad for a bird to be shifted from home to home. Ours already had 2 owners before he came to us. He can be a right pain in the **** sometimes but he is part of the family and we will never give him away!
Good luck - birds are such rewarding pets with loads of personality!
