Hi people of IRN fourm, my name is Alex and i am from Guatemala, Central America; i am the proud owner of two IRN a green one who’s name is Kiwi and a Gray one named Daikiri, they have been with me for around 3 weeks they are NOT hand feeding so they are a Little bit stressed about me and live here at my house, since I got divorced some time ago I lived with my Dog at an apartment but I could remember when I was young I always lived with birds my mom had an amazon and cockatiels for now she only have two love birds; so I started my trajectory to look for some bird I was thinking about a cockatiel but some day I look something great an AD at the newspaper talking about the IRN so I start a research at the internet over them (it is very hard to find this birds here) I found this forum and I have read a lot an learn a lot, first than anything I wanted a couple (it is going to be very hard to find another ones in some time my only exit is to import) so I made my best guessing if they are a couple or not, so as far as I can suppose Kiwi is a girl and Daikiri is a boy but I will have to wait to see; the guy who was selling them said that they are 5 month old, I am not sure about it because daikiri is starting to change the color of his peak the lower peak is taking the dark color and kiwi has it all red and what age the peak change the color? I found here that it happens when they grow but is it at 10 months or something like that?
Well after all of that I picked the gray and one green, I selected one that has the color more like a lime green and the body is even more light than the wings thinking that maybe since the color is a little bit lighter than the other I have more chances to have a girl my next step is the vet, there is not bird vets here at my country so tried to see any sign of sickness, well the guy took the and put them in a little box and gave them to me
That they become a real nightmare, I came to my home I had the cage the food (I am giving them some mix that my mom used to give to the cockatiels and amazons because here there is no pellets or any good seed diet only the sun flower seed so the preparation has a lot of seed for humans some low qualities seed for birds peanuts and some vegetables seed all of this is blended and that is what I giving to them so they does not have the chance to eat only sun flower seed)
Anyway I opened the box and there is my surprise a lot of blood was inside my God I took them out and kiwi had blood at her wing, and both of scream when I picked them it was a nightmare, well I called at one the best vets here (not a avian specialist since there is not avian specialist here) but he was at another city, the vet who looks my dog, no I cant trust a bird with him, is the best for dogs but I could remember that my moms amazon die after some visit to him, well I called some friend of mine he is a vet but he came out from vet school something like 2 years ago so he has no experience, he told me ok I don’t have experience in birds but will do my best, I took my chances and let him see kiwi at the end it was a blood feather he did not took it out because it was no broken only damaged and not near to the wing he told me that is not a good idea to took it out if it is not near to the wing, he applies some creams, all of this was 3 weeks ago so I think everything is great now!
I have a lot of questions about them and how to grow them in a proper way, for now they are very active, they are eating and drinking well, they does not scream when I approach to the cage anymore (before the scream and tried to fly) they have their wings clipped but I don’t like how they are clipped so I will wait to the feathers to grow and the I will clip it in the same way I used to do with amazons and cockatiels. Anyway maybe someone here could help me with something at the night I left them In a room with a heater because we are in our cold days here at my country, but I am not sure if our cold days are really too cold for them and maybe is better to turn off the heater so what do you think guys is a in what temperature range is good for them to be without a heater and the cage cover? Well that is my history I will appreciate any advice and any help to give my little ones the better and the longer of the lifes!

Hey Omnicromm,
Welcome to the forum! Congratulations on your new ringnecks. Boy, it sounds like you had some drama with your new pair of ringnecks. It’s good to hear you have everything under control and I am sorry you had to experience that bloody mess. Poor ringneck! I bet he/she was thrashing around and broke that blood feather. Good thing he has a wonderful owner to care after him!
Anyway, the beak starts to change color around 7-10 months. As the ringneck starts to look more “adult” the bottom part of the beak will become a black/red while the top becomes coral red. The iris in the eyes will start to change as well from black to yellow.
There is a great deal of information on this forum! Just search around and you’ll find mostly everything you’re looking for.
Welcome to this forum and we look forward to hearing more about you and your ringnecks!
Best Wishes

Well yes i have a dramatic introduction to IRN, but now is everything ok
; they are very active (mostly in the afternoon) both of them are so different, Dakiri likes to walk a litte bit fast with his/her wings a little bit open performing some kind of scream from time to time; kiwi preferes to clim around the cage; both of them are eating well now i started to offer them some seed around the cage but i have no results, anyway they only have been here for 3 weeks and with the first day drama they became very stressed; acording to the answers daikiri is going into his/her 7 month because the lower peak is now darker and the iris is more clear (not yellow yet) and kiwis´s peak is read and the iris is black and bigger than daikiri´s
its funny that when i was picking them up i had a list of the clues that are here to see if they are girl or boy botht now sometimes i look at them and they are so different and at secong look the are so alike that now i dont know but since there is nothing like DNA test here i will wait the two years to see what they will result.
thanks a lot for your wellcome Guys and have a great day all of you
