Violet and Blue Cleartail babies

Post by Jay »

First breeding clutches of this year, taken after a feeding session. Pardon the mess but hope you like the pictures nonetheless.

very cute babies, I love the colors. Not such a yellow fan myself (new to this so I have not memorized specific names of colors). But is the bird in your avatar yours? If so, what color is that? I saw that avatar and was like *jaw drops* that bird is gorgeous!

Yup. The avatar bird is a resident of my backyard aviary and is a TurquoiseBlue Grey Cleartail.

Those are some BEAUTIFUL babies. I don't know if it is rude to ask and if so just slap my hand- but how did you get the violet coloring?

Gorgeous! And I see a little yellow head in your bunch too.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.

@Peach,

The Violet factor is a primary mutation, meaning it cannot be produced by combining other color mutations. Being a Dominant mutation, you have to have the Violet gene in at least one of your parent birds to produce the coloration. For example:

Violet male x Blue hen
=50% Violet males and hens
=50% Blue males and hens

or:

Blue male x VioletGreen/Blue hen
=25% Violet males and hens
=25% VioletGreen/Blue males and hens
=25% Blue males and hens
=25% Green/Blue males and hens

From what I heard, the first Violets were sold over ten years ago for $50K. They were first bred by Gordon Hayes from Southern California. Nowadays, breeders sell them in the US from $800-$1500. More than that in other countries.

Hope that helps.

That makes since... I didn't know that violet was primary mutation. So that is interesting. Learn something new every day!

Thanks Jay!

Again cute babes!
