Need some help please :-)

Post by zivie17 »

I brought my IRN Indi a week ago she is only 2 months old (turns 3 months on the 27th of this month) they said she is hand tamed. Thing is she/he won't step up onto my hand and everytime i try go near her i get bitten she doesn't run away or anything (she can't fly because they had clipped her wings :( ), her/his pupils dilate and Indi just wants to attack. Is this normal because of her age? I keep persisting though i just act like it doesnt hurt when i get bitten. What are some good ways to tame lil Indi. I want to take Indi out of the cage but i can't. help me I'm only new to this

Don't force her out. Let her come out on her own and explore her new surroundings. You are rushing into wanting her tame. Trust is the first step in taming and this could take months to accomplish.

Thanks for that :) I do understand it may take a while i just want to know some good ways to try and gain her trust and start taming Indi. I realise that she won't be tame straight away.

Is she in her cage when you approach her? I know Mojito did not like to be approached while he was in his cage at first. I just let him come out of his cage on his own, once he was outside he was happy to step up and be handled.

It's as if his cage is "his" space, his safe place where he likes to make the rules. As we grow our trust and he learns new things, we work on the who's the boss of the cage issue.

Good luck with your baby:)

Yeah Indi is in the cage. do you think if i let her come out she will be easier to approach. Yesterday she started to let me feed her some fruit and nuts out of my hand which was great :)

I think that if she was "handraised" and is still young she will be farmiliar with hands and may be more willing to let you handle her outside her cage. That was my experience anyhow. Mojito does not like to be handled while he is in his cage, or backed into a corner. As soon as he comes out, he wants to be touched and trains, he looks for it.

I let her come out of her cage yesterday and she jumped on my hand and crawled up to my shoulder so i gave her a reward and when she let me pat her i would giver her a lil treat. It was great she was so so lovely. The thing is she will only go near me now if my mum tried to touch her she didnt like it at all and won't take food from anyone else, is that a normal characteristic of an IRN to only truely bond with one person?

It is very common. My Max would only come to me, would run like mad from anyone else.
He would put up with my parents after a while when he was left with them if I went on holiday, but as soon as I turned up he wouldn't go near them again.
Ziggy (new hand-reared baby) was a lot more sociable when I got him, but now after 3 weeks with just me is a bit reluctant to go near others and certainly won't go on their hands.
If you spend a bit of time getting them socialised they will put up with others, but ultimately loads (and probably most - I stand to be corrected there) end up being one-person birds.
Even Lories are the same - and sometimes it can only be a gender thing. Hates/likes male/female and vice-versa.

Up the top of the forum there is a search feature. If you put in 'clicker training' without the '' thingos, you'll find quite a few posts.
