So... how come I can't find any IRN plushie toys?

Post by electronegative »

I've been looking both in stores and online, and I can't find a single plush IRN. I had a dream that I had a giant (think 3 feet long) stuffed IRN and now I want to make it a reality. Seriously. Has anyone seen one? I've seen stuffed parrots, mostly macaws, and I'll fall back on that if I can't find an IRN, but.... so cute....

I might be able to make one. ... I'll have a look at materials when I'm at fabric store next...That could be funny, I'd love to how my birds react to that! I have a feeling they wouldn't even stay in the same room as it.
It would need to make noises when squeezed though.

That would be amazing. If you do, please take lots of pictures and, if you don't mind sharing, tell how you did it! I'm terrible at sewing but I can follow instructions/patterns.

And yes to the squeezing idea - we can't have a quiet IRN, can we?

An acquaintance of mine knitted a friend for Rocky. She never saw a Ringneck, so it is a rather stout, variegated green bird with a horn coloured beak and a short tail. Still, it's very nice and it is hanging in the living room where the birds live. :D

Alpha- I saw some very nice fabric for a ringneck yesterday... The question is: would a toy ringneck have the same fabric on it's flights and tail as the rest of the body? Or would it have a less plush tail?

And where does one get a thingy that you can record noises onto to put inside it? I can't even think of the right word to start searching for them....
And would my nieces like toy ringnecks for christmas...

If we can resolve those questions, we have a starting point.

If I were making it I'd make the tail more firm or stiff so it'd stay in place, but maybe that wouldn't be as cuddly.

The thingies for making squawking noises are called sound modules: http://www.amazon.com/Message-Recorder- ... B000JG902O

Thanks, electro. That's so cool!
My boyfriend thinks the nieces will like that.
Now the hard part will be recording Nila talking. .. oh and designing the thing. ..

Maybe start with a side outline and insert a chest and back panel? You're quite on your own for feet.

I was thinking along those lines. Dave has a stuffed toy macaw (Nila is killing it on my avatar pic) and I think I can get the general idea for the pattern from that.
I really want one of those noise thingies that can do a few different phrases. Can anyone point me in that direction?
Daves macaw toy says about 5 offensive phrases....
Pity I have quite a bit of work over the next few days, or I would have bought the fabric today. My wee bird gave me the perfect photo pose to model it on.

Whoa, look at what I found: http://www.silverseams.com/gallery/sun- ... llery.html

I feel like that's easily adaptable to an IRN (or any other parrot) and you can resize it to make it as big as you like.

Perhaps I need to make a trip to the fabric store as well...

I have started on the toy today, just creating a pattern from photos of our birds. I forgot to buy some light grey felt though. I am trying to make turquoiseblue ones because we are going to record Nila talking for it.

I've had a bit more free time lately, so I decided to get started on mine. I have discovered: a) sewing is hard and time-consuming especially without a sewing machine, and b) I never should have stopped doing arts and crafts. The head, which is all that I've been able to complete as of just now, took me 4 hours. I suck.

Here's what I have so far:

Image

Lower mandible is a bit too large, so it ended up looking more like a baby IRN or maybe an alexandrine than an adult ringneck, but whatever. Not too shabby for my first time sewing ever, improvements incoming. The eye being all black makes it look juvenile.

P.S. Is anyone else ever reminded of a small dinosaur when they look at their IRNs? I think it's the scaly pink ring around the eye. When Peaches blinks slowly at me she looks oddly reptilian. It's sort of cute though! I'll need to add that pink ring to the plushie.

wow--well done. It does look juvenile, but that's ok.

It anyone needs custom ringneck eyes, I could give it a shot. I am a glass worker specializing in beads. I could try to make some ringneck eye buttons.

Thanks all! I'm trying to get mine done ASAP too, but I have a feeling I'll be making many more for friends/family if this one is a success, so if you end up making the beads I would love to use them.

How big do you think the eye would need to be for the size plushie toy you are making electronegative?

Those look great, even if they're not "fancy"!

The eyes I put in in the picture a few posts above are 9 mm and they look about right.

I don't know much about toy eyes, are they like buttons with a shank on the back, a bead, screw back? how do they get on there?

I really like those disc lampwork beads ranechild.

How would you use them in jewelry? Do you have any photos of your beads made into things?

The ones I used are "safety eyes," and they are specifically made so they're hard to remove so children (or birds, or cats or dogs) don't pull them off and swallow them. They look like giant earrings with the back part being a giant screw that you screw a small washer on to keep it in place.

But honestly beads or buttons would work just fine.

Coming a bit late to this but, electronnegative, THAT IRN HEAD ROCKS!!!

OK, it may be a little disconcerting being all disembodied like that, but really, you did a FABULOUS job! First time sewing, eh? Fine job.  Let you not go so long between crafts again.

:D :D :D :D :D

I'm not making one, at least not this year, but I'm eagerly awaiting the pics from you all's toys.

Yay!! MissK stamp of approval?

Yeah, I probably should have hidden the fact that it was disembodied. Oh well. I showed it to Peaches and she promptly attacked the eye. Was probably like, "that doesn't look like me, are you serious?"

As we say in England, Crikey! Electronegative and Ranechild you two are very creative!

We all can appreciate skill and craftsmanship, and also Claire for even attempting to do this, I wouldn't know where to start even if I had the time!!

Awesome, can't wait to see the finished products of all your plushie efforts :)

Don't give me too much credit, I'm just following a conure pattern and making changes to IRN where I see fit. Personally, I can't wait to see Claire's since she actually sews!

Mine is an utter disater! My boyfriend thought the first one was too big. I made a smaller one and the fur was too thick for the size of the toy and looked manky. I've been too busy worrying about other things, which doesn't help!
We are still waiting for the noise thingy to arrive too.
