New Bird...Thoughts please

Post by Skyes_crew »

Went to pick up a new hen and the woman asked me to take a 4 year old green male off her hands. Brought him home in the dark so I didn't notice until the next morning a few things. His eyes are solid, they don't dilate. And his lower mandible is red. Any thoughts?

He's cute. :)
Even when you talk to him the eyes don't pin? That's odd!

Define normal lol. He's completely untamed. Has never felt human touch except to be caught and placed in a cage. He's amazingly wild and I love it :)

No...I spent 20 min trying to get him to change emotion and pin. Nothing. I always attract the unique cases for some reason lol. :D

He's been here 3 days now. So I'm not sure shock would do that for so long. He views my hand as if its a machete lol. Peanut butter won't do the trick this time

I'm interested in hearing what someone who actually knows about such things has to say. ...

Skyes, I have had a couple of IRNs of different mutations which have a 'black' eye unrelated to the mutation. You won't see the pupil in such an eye. The bird is a normal green IRN with a 'black' eye which cause is yet to be determined. Good on you for pusshing for an answer. We humans are an apathetic species except when it directly concerns us.

PS: the red lower mandible is not unusual and I have often seen black or red in the same mutation.

So I was right

I am even more interested now. Does having different eyes affect their social relationships with other birds?

Sorry for the random question on your topic, Melissa.

Melissa, we have discussed such birds on the forum in the past, but I can't find the link. :( Prodigy has some of them.

I have a similar bird that splits for Cleartailed and it is a blue bird , I know that there is a dark eyed cleartailed mutation out there . It however has no effect on the mutation , It simply has a dark eye .

Yours might also be one of them

We don't have cleartail here on the island :( it's a nice thought though. Wish it were true. The woman told me he came from her uncles aviaries and he breeds pallids and Lutino's. so I have no clue. I'm putting him to my creamino hen so I guess I'll have some answers soon enough. :)

that's going to make it hard to read the birds body language when you can't tell if the eyes are pinned
