My poor baby

Post by Aldeleen »

Hi all, I havnt posted in a while-- however today my heart is so sore and terribly worried about my little Pi-ko!

I took Pi-ko to the general vet today about his wing-- the vet refered me to a specialist -- Pi-ko's wing is possibly broken and will need surgery to fix it! ;( My heart is so sore and i feel terrible :(

I came back from a business trip on friday -- was away for two weeks! I left Pi-ko under the care of my partner and whilst he was trying to handle her--- she flew into the slidinG door! That was already almost 2 weeks ago!!! I got a call and my boyfriend said that her wing is hanging... unfortuately i was so far away from home that it was impossible for me to come home... i came back on friday and i was shocked to see her-!!!! oh shame man!!!

I didnt realise it was so bad and i took him this morning!!!

i wish i never left and now my babes are hurting and i feel so sad! What if she will never be able to fly again-- and now also all the stress of the vet :(

please think of me and my pi-ko--- hoping that my baby will be ok! :( :(

That's not good news. :(

I hope all will go well for Pi-ko at the vets and wishing a quick recovery. It is amazing how quick animals can bounce back almost as good as new. :)

My Pikkels is at home---- he visited the vet yesterday for x-rays and to possibly fix his left wing-- which shown up on the x-rays as broken :(

After a long discussion with the vet-- we decided not to operate on his wing--- the case is as follows--

My job requires me to travel 1 or 2 weeks at a time and then my baby usualy goes and stay with my family-- Pi-ko has a bit of a problem with men in general and prefers the company of females--- so either my mom or my sister classifies as a suitable baby sitter for him/her?! However, i was unable to get to them this time around and due to short notice -- I decided to leave Pi-ko in the care of my bf(male) lol -- ok so in the first week of my trip-- my bf phones and says that Pi-ko isnt handling his company well and by trying to escape or run away from him-- he flew into the closed sliding door and his feathers on his wing is standing up-- i asked him whether i should try to come back over the weekend and whether it is serious-- HE SAID NO its ok--he will be fine! Over the next few days he said Pi-ko is not eating and just sitting there :( I GOT MORE AND MORE WORRIED AND ALARMED. I asked my sister to go and check on him-- that was sunday-- she said that she will rather take him and keep him there for the rest of the time until i get back, she also said that is wing is hanging, but he is in good spirit and eating well--

i got back on the following friday.

When i fetched him--- i could imediately that see something is wrong and was so upset because i knew something bad must have happened-- i took him to the vet on monday morning and got a referal to a avian specialist.

So after the whole drama-- Pi-ko will now have a broken wing for the rest of his life and will never have the use of his left wing again! The fracture has healed on its own and unfortunately the fracture is just below his shoulder and the bone has shifted. To correct the fracture, we would've had to re-break the wing and insert a steel pin to secure the bone!

This would just cause him so much pain :( I spoke to the vet and asked him what was the best to do and he advised me just to leave the wing as it is!

Pi-ko is himself again and playing and eating well! He is in no pain or discomfort, the only sign is a droop in his left wing!

I feel ok about the outcome, but have terrible regret that i didnt think furher and made a plan to not leave him with my bf :( i wish it never happened :( and feel sorry for my angel who now will never fly again.... the up-side is i never have to cut his wings again :)

I will post some pics on the forum. He will go for a check up again in 3 weeks!

Has someone had a birdie with a broken or sore wing? Any advise for me...... I so sad this happend but i love my baby so much and he is so young still (2 years, 4 months) . I am also convinced that no-one takes better care of him than me, his mommy :)

Good news that Pi-ko is not in any pain and that he is back home again. :)

Don't beat yourself up about what happened, we can't see into the future. At least you know next time you need to go away, to let a girl to look after him since he doesn't like male company.

If you clipped Pi-ko wings before, then I guess it doesn't really matter if he can not fly again since he wouldn't be flying with clipped wings. :)

Glad all is ok with Pi-ko though. :)

:) Im trying to make peace with it all but its a hard pill to swallow-- everytime i see him im reminded of it and how i wish i could fix it or just turn back time! Yes, he use to get his wings clipped but was in the middle of maulting and therefor able to fly, and then into the sliding door :(

Thank you for your msg Pinkdevil! When one's fids gets hurt its not nice! :(

I just want the best life for my Pi-ko and I just hope that in the long run things will be ok! I wont hav to do any clippings anymore and so he will be carrying his full feathers-- which might be even good! :)

I will keep updating on his progress!

:( Oh my, I just read this. This must be just, heartbreaking for you.
Please dont beat yourself up over it, these things happen, even in the safest environments.
I have always thought that vets usually just take the whole wing off if broken behond repair? I dont think I could bare to see that. Just shows how fragile birds are. :( Its not your fault at all. Or your partners. Its just one of those accidents.
I am glad hes not in pain and is getting on with 'living' his life again. He will get used to not being able to fly. Many birds without flight can still live a happy healthy life. and. Hes got you to give him the love he needs. Next time, you know now that a female reletive would be a better option when you go away.
*Big Hugs* Im wishing Pi Ko a speedy recovery.

Aawe Lauren Thank you so much!! I have been looking out for your post, maybe i missed them... but how are your babies doing? did any of the egg hatch! i know its been a long time!

Pi-ko is ok-- he eats fine and back to his old self again! i dont think that he will miss flying that much-- he never realy did fly -- i only allowed it when he finishes his Moults.. for the most of it he just sits on the curtain rail flapping! I think that i feel worse than him and i dont even think that he notices it anymore :) he has a little bit of movement it the wing like to stretch a bit and preen but not like it was before---- I call him my broken birdie now -- aaahh shame man! He's got no tail feather either so looking really like a blue chicken lol!

I guess it makes him just all the more special and i will continue to provide him with the best care! Also, ONLY with female baby sitters lol!

I willl take some pics over the weekend and posty them :)
