Parrot did WHAT?!?

Post by MissK »

This morning I discovered Rocky has pulled an entire sheet of newspaper from the pan under the grate so he can play with it in his cage. The page is not damaged in any way.

What silly thing has your parrot done?

I change Fats' water every morning. It's in a little pyrex dish on the floor of his cage. Every evening when I come home, there is a ball in the water dish. If it is a dyed vine ball, the water will be some exotic color.
Twice this week, I have come home and found not-a-ball but his seed dish in his water dish. It's a little plastic one with two wires on the back to brace it on the side of the cage. He has been taking it down (dumping the food) and putting it in his water dish. Silly.

That's clever.

Sapphire likes to sneak into Nilas cage when he's out. She has a drink from his dish and then dumps the dish of water on the floor! As soon as it is refilled, she is back in there tipping it out. We had to change the style of holder to one she couldn't lift off.

I was playing Muse VERY loudly on Daves massive stereo, effectively drowning out the neighbours top 40 hits and lawnmower, the birds (including Janey and Charlie who are visiting) settled down for a nap near the stereo, Nila had his head tucked under his wing. When I turned the music down all 4 birds moved as closer to the speakers until the cd ended.

sanjay has a plastic melon shaped food bowl which I put his nuts in,he has recently learned the art of lifting it and chucking it on the floor of his cage, then nags at me to pick it up, If I do, he promptly chucks it again!,

Human did what?
Me: Nila go play with your girlfriend, she's seexxxy.
Nila: exxxy
Me: Yes, Nila, she is Seexxy!
Nila: EXXY
Me: oh, shoot. We don't want a parrot that says that, do we David?
Nila: Avid, avid Eexxy!

Lucky he can't say S's! Any suggestions for a suitable rhyming word?

Today Sanjay and I were indulging in a bit of mutual beak rubbing, kissing and nibbling (on his part), when with great flourish, he deftly removed my nose stud! You could almost hear the "ta dah!", fortunately, he dropped it and did not swallow it.

I ended up doing two shifts today, someone called in sick, so I was late back, just as I was getting Sanjays fresh food etc, the phone rang, so I came back in and answered it, absolutely infuriated because I had not brought his food in with me, he squawked and screamed all through the telecon!, fortunately it was my daughter on the phone, so not too embarassing!.

Mine somehow dismantled a pair of fingernail clippers... i have yet to find the rivet part.. you know the part that the cutting part swivels around on.

Also, if I leave the room and don't shut the door all the way he will fly by the door several times until the wind from his wings makes the door open up just enough.. and btw, let me tell you.. an IRN can squeeze through a 3inch opening in full flight.

When my bird flies through the small gap in the door.. he does it one of two ways...

sometimes he turns sideways with his wings spread wide.. turning his wingspan vertical..

but most commonly he gets momentum going and folds his wings (or raises them way up so the tips are touching) as he passes through the door... by the time he gets through the door and starts flying again he's about half way to the floor and just regains himself and keeps going.

Present them with challenges and they will overcome them.. if they want to.

wow, slow motion would be amazing on that.. i could attempt a regular crappy cellphone video of it but some how I don't think it would look as cool as it sounds :P

Not near as cool as birds flying through doors but Snow used to...

1) pull out the grate over his litter tray from inside his cage and escape out into the room through the gap. I now clip the grate to one of the cage-sides from the outside with a carabener.
2) Try to bathe in his water dish which is less than a third his size. He's split a (thin) steel water-bowl trying to force his bum into it. He still does it if I forget to mist-bath him.
