new irn?
hi folks, im new here and so is rosie ringneck!
rosie was found by the police wandering the streets and was handed into an animal rescue centre. i already have a mitred conure and thought he might like some company when im at work so i decided to re-home rosie!
ive only had her 2 days now but she looked liked she wanted out her cage so i let her out! she immediatly flew onto my plate to share my breakfast which i thought was cute! i'll add a pic of her if i can work it out. couple of questions for you experts out there... is she indeed, a "she"? and is she an indian rn. the lady at the rescue centre told me she was an african! pls help. also she doesnt seem to like charlie (the mirted conure) and he doesnt appear to like her. when they get together they fight! i find this distressing and im sure both birds do too. so will they grow to like each other? and can i help them too?
all comments are greatly apprechiated as im new to birds!
thanks for reading this, pls help. i cant work out how to add an image, pls help me with that too!

First, kudos to you for rescuing a bird. Sounds like you've come down with Multiple Bird Syndrome - an affliction that, happily, is difficult to cure.
I managed to bring up the picture by pasting http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee14 ... yplate.jpg into my browser. It's hard to tell from that picture what exactly you have but my guess, based on what appears to be a dark lower mandible, is that you have a female Indian ringneck. African and Indian ringnecks are two subspecies of the same species. Indian ringnecks tend to be larger, somewhat darker green and have darker lower beaks when mature than Africans. Indians are much more common in captivity. But I'll again put forth the disclaimer that it's hard to tell from the picture.
Although it might be too late to matter in this instance as they've already had some contact with each other it is a good idea when introducing a new bird to an existing bird to quarantine the new bird for about a month before placing him with other birds. You won't hurt anything if you're at least able to keep the ringneck and the conure in seperate rooms for a month. Once that's done, you can start introducing them by placing their cages near eachother for a few days and letting them to get to know eachother at a distance. If they seem interested in eachother and aren't trying to bite eachother through the bars then you can let them out together and see how they do. Here's the tough part...some birds won't ever get along and there's nothing you can do about it.

hi dunk!
the better think than you can do is to seperate them in different cages and put them from far to close day by day.
Spent your time equal to the two birds.
Indroducing them and you will see what is the future.
Maybe they become friends, enemies or should have a typical social life.
But be careful you must watch them when they are together because there is the small possibility to have serious injuries or even kill.
Females ringnecks are more dangerous ( like all females....)

thanks folks for your replies, from so far away as well! texas and greece! its a funny thought for me to think ppl in such "cool and exotic" places, like to keep "cool and exotic" birds!! ha ha. maybe you like to keep scottish birds like sparrows and magpies! lol. a strange tought right enough. oh well there you go. maybe, if i can talk openly and freely to a taxan and a greek, then we should get all the people who are at war with each other to take up bird keeping!!!!! can you imagine tony blair and mr bush phoning bin laden to ask how his irn breeding program is going? ha ha ha quite a thought! i really should get some more sleep i think!! lol
well thanks again anyway folks, hope to hear from you soon,
Dunk

Hello and welcome to the flock here! You did a great thing rescuing Rosie! She looks gorgeous.
Jim is exactly right. Please have a quarantine period and slowly introduce them.
My partners Mother is Scottish and still has her accent. Some people do have pet magpies!

Lauren was kind enough not to add "for the first time in recorded history".
Texas is a very pleasant place to live but I have a hard time thinking of it as cool and exotic, unless one has a fascination with armadillos and longhorn cattle. No native parrots.
Again, welcome to the forum and good luck with the new ringneck.

hello dunk
and here in greece we have a lot of sparrows and magpies, but we havent native parrots.
i think the problem is that bush, blair and landen dont speak by phone for they birds, what a pity....
its nice to communicate people from so many different countries.
i hope maybe next year visit scottland, i want it so much. I suppose a travel around highlands will be great.
dunk whats happen with the foxes hunting, is it legal now?
