Quite new to ringnecks and already confused.

Post by Aleksandrabenedict »

Hi, not sure how to start this. I'm new to ringnecks but done a bit of research before. Unfortunately my expirience didn't start well. I got an IRN in August. We called her Luna and she was around 8 month old. Gorgeous girl(we thought she is girl) but untamed. We made quite a bit of progress with her. She start to get less scared from us and start to step up on stick and sit on shoulder or climb to our heads. She has started to take a treat from our hands as well. All was going good until 2 weeks ago when I noticed her one day in quite strange mood.. She was some sort of week, fluffed feathers, and she let me to scratch her around her neck, which is unusual because she still hated hands and would bite any time we try to put finger near her... I got worried and took her to the vet even tho she seemed to be back to her normal self the next day. The vet told me that she is ok, that all reactions good, her mouth nice and clean, her wings and legs in good condition, so I stopped worrying... Also vet suggested that she might feel a bit lonely and maybe is best we get a friend for her. That's exactly what I've done and 4 days ago I brought home a gorgeous 2.5 year old boy, Sky. Sky is very tamed and he is also talking. He is very friendly and if he don't want to be touched he would gently push your finger away with his beak. All was perfect, Luna seemed to get excited with the friend. I still put them to separate cages but close to each other and when they was out of cage they get close and Luna even shared a nut with sky from her beak... But, yesterday evening I've noticed Luna had again the same issue, she looked unwell and again let me next to her. I phoned the other vets and made appointment for her for the next day, but late evening I found her hanging upside down in her perch and very weak. I took her imidiately to vet hospital for emergency appointment but unfortunately was too late. She stayed the night there in oxygen camera but didn't made it to the morning. I am devastated. And keep blaming my self, because I was told that she had suspected pneumonia and that if I took her to them 2 weeks earlier she would have had a chance to survive... Up patently my vet wasn't compitent in birds. But he never told me that he don't know much about birds and before taking Luna there I speciffically asked them if they do deal with birds and been told to bring her down. I wish that vet just told me that he don't know much bout parrots and suggest I visig someone else, instead I was told my parrot is absolutely fine. It's really hurts to loose Luna and I loved her with all my heart but now I also have to think about Sky and I'm getting paranoid. Whole day today I was cleaning and disinfecting. We washed the cage with bleach and water solution, then I washed every perch and toy with soapy water, then vinigar solution, then soap again, then descend extant from pet store... But I still scare Sky might get ill as well.. I have an appointment for him on Tuesday to make sure he is healthy, but I litteraly paranoid about everything... He was eating today and drinking, talked a lot, then came next to me on the sofa and started climb over me, but when he sits on cage I've noticed he has ruffled feathers while trying to get asleep.. Is it bad sign? I also all the time worry that maybe e is too cold in our house, plus not sure if I've done enough to sterilise all equipment. I'm scare he will get contaminated with same infection Luna had.. I don't want to loose him but I think I start to see a sign of illnes in every his move just cod I'm overthinking nd too scared... I need some advise and reassurance... Keep blaming my self for Luna and thinking that I've missed something. But I was cleaning her cage regularly and changing water a few times a day and her food daily.. Please can someone give some advise and help. Thank you.

I'm so sorry! I don't think pneumonia is contagious, but I'm not a vet... Considering your birds were in direct contact with each other already, a vet check is in order as a precaution.
Is there an avian specialist near you? Our nearest is an hours drive, but after discovering the complete incompetence of the local vet who treats birds, we think it is worth the drive! Luckily our case wasn't life threatening.

Diet plays a very important role in the health of birds, so talking to any avian vet about diet is a good idea. The right food keeps the immune system strong.

It is pretty normal to fluff up feathers for a nap. If your bird is napping more frequently than usual or just sitting fluffed up he could be cold or feeling unwell.

Best of luck with your new vet!
