Hi everyone

Post by an3li3s3 »

i have just brought an indian ringneck of a preloved website, he has also had another perivous owner before the person i got him from, but my parents have a ringneck whos about 9 years old hes talks takes food off you and will let you stroke the top of his head etc. but charlie the new ringneck is apprently 2 years old. will not come up to you whilst in his cage. he does seem to like conversation, also have let him out and he flies around the room but had to handle him with gloves as he bites and makes some silly noises.
he was kept in some horrible cage with just a mirror, (which i thought they aren't suppose to have) not eating the right sort of food. and just basically sat with another type of bird and some little sparrow things also in like the size of a little cuboard. so i got the idea that he never had any one to socialise with and this is why the way he is.
i got him relatively cheap and i had to take him cos i have grown up with my dads bird and hes so clever and then to see a bird like that stuck in some small place, and cage not eating the right things, and not socialising with anyone is really cruel.
anyway.... my question is do you think i can tame the bird at all?. will in time he be used to me my partner and children and come up to the bars instead of sitting away and do most ringnecks talk at what age do you think i could still teach him to?
i am not 100 percent sure hes 2 this is just what i have been told... so im hoping with age he can relax abit. :/ also any tips my partner wants to hold him with not using any thing to protect his hands any ideas as we are using an oven glove and he bites through that.
thankyou look forward to hearing your advice.

Hi there, if he is only 2, you may just have a she and not a he, unless he is already getting his black ring feathers as males only mature at 3 with their full black ring...

Yes you will be able to tame him through time and patience, are his wings clipped? if so, best way to allow him to get used to you is to let him out the cage in the morning or evening when you have some time to spend with him and just let him wander around you and get used to you.

Also, try hold him, with gloves, just twice a day, for 5min at a time, do not overdo it as he will become more afraid of you...

Find out his favourite kind of treat and everyday offer it to him through the bars of the cage.

Slowly he will get used to you and take the treat from your hand, once he is used to you, and being held by you, you will soon be able to teach him to step up as well.

Males often pick up talking alot easier then females, regardless of age, so if he is male, you should definately still stand a chance of teaching him to talk, just talk to him everyday, and repeat words you want him to learn.

Hope this helps.
