Hello! new 1 yr old irn, kiwi

Post by Kash-alp »

Hello,

So tomorrow is a big day for me as i adopt my first bird. I was originally looking for an african grey but the price range is a bit high for me being a first bird. I have always grown up with parrots as my parents used to keep all sorts including IRN, and my neighbour currently is also a parrot enthusiast so i have lots of help at hand if need be.
The IRN i will be adopting is a 1 year old believed to be female named Kiwi with great temperment and a very caring owner who had her since hatching. I hope to do well and have done a TON of research over the last few months although ive never posted cause i didnt really have anthing to post.

Here is a short clip of kiwi and her current owner. I will share more pics/vids after i recieve her tomorrow.

Wish me luck..
Steve

P.S any words of encouragment or advice is more then welcome. :)

Kiwi looks like a lovely bird... obviously comfortable with the person whom she currently lives with. If she isn't used to new people, she may take some time to warm to you... We haven't socialised our birds enough with other people. When other people come to our house, they don't like it when they pay attention to them... they feel safer if they can sit back and observe the people first.

If you find the bird is scared of you initially, be patient, with love and attention and time, she will come around.

Good luck and welcome!

Ellie.

Thank you. :)
I am up tonight reading frantically any info i may have missed to prepare and present the best possible environment i can for kiwi's arrival, and i know that the temptation to almost immediatly try and handle her will be great. I really hope when i first meet her tomorrow she takes to me and even if it takes the current owner to transfer her on to my finger my goal is to make a bond as fast as possible without stressing her out.

Fingers are crossed and im hoping for the best but expecting some set backs. Either way patience is something im going to have to learn fairly quickly i assume :p

Congratulations on Kiwi.

She looks like a darling. I am sure you will have no trouble winning her over once she settles in.

Yes i did pickup Kiwi! :D :) :D :) She is a sweatheart! We had a bit of a longer car ride home last night, because of traffic and i was a little worried that the long ride would stress her out but she did just fine. After we had got home i immediately set up her cage and after a brief visit figured it was best to just say good night. This morning we headed upto Pets Marts and grabbed a few new toys for her to keep her occupied.

I am really amazed at how well she is taking the transition and how well behaved she is. Although she has been very quite so far and only making cute little squeeky clucking sounds when i pet her head, however she did let out one whistle after i sat down beside her this afternoon and started eating a sandwich. So far she has been very good and has even let me, my girlfriend, and my son hold her but she wont go far from the cage yet. I can pet her but any attempt to walk out of the room and she flies right back to her cage. I figure thats still excellent progress and going to give her a few days still before i try something new and drastic.

We went and looked for the bird stands but they were out of stock and the only one they had was a little pricey. I may end up building her one so she can come sit in the living room with us once she is comfortable leaving her cage area.

Anyways, i have attached a few pictures and ill be sure to post lots more if anything new or exciting happens.

It is great to read Kiwi is settling in well to her new life and family.
I am sure with time, Kiwi will want to explore the rest of the house, especially if there is more activity going on there.

Yeah build her one !!! .. you can make it all different textures and sizes if you use natural branch and add knotted ropes to climb down, etc. Home made are soooo much better and she will love it as her own.

She looks like she is a very lucky bird to have you and you to have her .. :-) very happy for you both

So i did end up making Kiwi her own play stand today. I think it turned out great, and her progress in transistion has been awesome. Pretty sure she was tryign to say "kiwi" and "please" today. Ill post up more info with pics of her new stand in a new thread tomorrow.
