Three of my birds have mites, (2 budgies and a conure).
What causes birds to get mites?

Re: Mites?
If they have had any contact from outdoor birds like sparrows etc, they can catch them. Or if you give them tree branches or flowers, they can get them from the wild birds coming in contact with the same branches. Your birds playing in the yard, or maybe they already had them prior to you getting them.
Not sure how easy it is for bird mites to travel, but with reptiles if you have contact with an infected snake with mites, the mites can climb onto you or your clothing and travel back withyou and infecting the reptiles.
I am guessing a similar thing could happen with bird mites.

Re: Mites?
Budgies are more likely to get mites. When i had a budgie it got mites. I brought in a outside branch and used it as a perch, i think that is how my budgie got mites. I then treated it with a product from the local pet store..
