Albino Snowy IRN

Post by SDAnimalKing »

Ok so I'm probably going to be buying a IRN this saturday. It kind of depends on how the visit goes tomorrow morning... How much do the Albino's usually go for. I know in reptiles they are usually more expensive because they are more "rare" than the normal colors you come across. what are the general prices of these birds? The lady I'm buying from is asking $500. how does this sound... I know i looked at one breeder... they were asking $750.... Thanks

 Woah, I'm not sure what the going price is over there. But I think its similar to Australia. $500 sounds a bit much. :? Hopefuly someone from the states can help you here.

An albino will go for about $300-$400 in the U.S. You might be able to do a little better but if you're getting a vet visit and a large bag of food for $500 you're certainly not getting ripped off.

An albino is a combination of the blue and ino genes, both of which have been around for a while and bred with extensively. They're not particularly rare.

Some albino males can get a faint brown ring, but it varies from individual to individual. They don't all get one and the absence of a ring is not a certain indicator that the bird is female. DNA sex testing is easy, reliable and costs about $20 if you decide you want to know which sex the bird is.

My impression from half the world away is that in Australia IRN's are much more popular relative to other birds than they are here, and consequently in relatively more plentiful supply and cheaper than they are here. My vet says she sees about 10 IRN's a year as compared to over 200 cockatiels.

Indian Ringnecks are quite a funny story here in Australia. Since we had our imports cut off in the 90's we were left with strong stocks of some.. and much less of others.

Admitedly $40 for an albino in Australia is still crazy cheap. I sell mine easily as tame young for $150-180 so you got a good deal there.

A green IRN here is about $20-30 wild.
A blue IRN is about $70-100 wild.
Albino $100ish wild.
Grey same as blue, sometimes less than blue.
Turquoise throw on another $20-30 to the price of the above colours.
Cinnamon same deal as turquoise...

Quality hand reared birds can expect to have about $75-100 added onto the price... there is alot of varying degree of hand rearing quality here in Australia... much of it rather dissapointing.

They are not hugely common as pets compared to cockateils and budgies... however they are becoming the next step up for new breeders as the affordable but exciting thing to breed. They throw you into the world of parrots that other lower end price birds cant do.. and they are very easy to breed with.

Once you start talking about our dom.pieds ($6k for a proven history birds since importation) or our cleartails ($5kish for proven history birds since importation) violets and cobalts are about $1-1.5k... all these prices are for 1yo and under.

I know this topic went way out of the original margin, sorry :(

I would say your Albino will throw you into a very fun, fulfilling world of birds, and wish you the best of experiences with him/her :D

Maybe a little off from the original topic, but the differences between aviculture in Australia and the US certainly make for an interesting discussion.

$20-30 Aussie dollars is about $16-25 US dollars. It's amazing that you guys can get a green IRN for that. They go for about $200 here. On the high end, something like a violet cleartail will cost about $2,500

 Wow 20 - 40 bucks for a green nowdays? 8 years ago we got Jibby for 300! Hand reared I believe. (I was 15, parents bought him for me.).
2 years ago we got Lola from a breeder, parent raised, paid 150. Then, most of the parent raised I enquired about were about 100 - 150. :? I just settled on Lolas breeder because he seemed to know what he was talking about. Didnt really mind the cost.
I dont know if its just me, but when we got Jibby, didnt see IRNs much, but now, its seems you see them for sale everywhere now. I can imagine, they are an exciting bird to breed. Albinos seem to be popular, along with the greens, blues and lutinos.
Sorry for going off the topic further. Tell us how you go and whether you get your albino.

The pure white albinos I have seen do not get rings, but it looks like your baby has a bit of pigment, so maybe a lighter ring? I have seen all sorts of prices for ringies in the states, but my pair are both rehomed, one from the LA Pound, one from a friend on a bird board, so I have not carefully checked prices.

But what is money compared to that cute little face......

I just bought my dna tested green male for $250. canadian she had lutinos, albinos, and blues, she also had a violet that she was selling for $700. the blues and lutinos were $400 and The albino was $500. all the birds were DNA tested so you new what you were getting. They are exceptionatly well socialized birds also she loves on her babys constantly so they are very very sweet well worth the money. I can do anything with mine he'6 months old now and just a joy he will lay on his back on my hand and loves to be cuddled and petfrom the top of his head right to the end of his tail. I couldn't ask for a nicer bird.
