Careers and Fids

Post by Lauren »

I'm just interested in how you juggle breeding and the care of your birds with work/careers?

Many of us have full time jobs. Myself, I'm a student from home so I get plenty of time spent with my bubs.. and chatting on this board hehe. I'm looking at soon working full time, maybe even shift work. But I hate the thought of Jibs and Yoda home alone all day. Working night shifts would be ideal for me!

How do you blend 2 very important lives together? I'd love to be a full time mother hen! But most of life is lived at work especially in this ever so expensive world we live in!

Good question Chick!! I would like to know how some do it too. I am fortunate I can take a couple with me and when I have a clutch I'm hand feeding I have a portable brooder to tote them back and forth with me and I can feed them through out the day.

My IRN Tango loves to go to work with me and talks to all the customers, They really think he's pretty cool.

:D That would be the ultimate job for you! Thats awesome you get take your babies to work! I think having birds at work would make the atmosphere very happy! Your customers must love it!

After my study I'm looking at getting a job at an airport or with an airline. Hmm, somehow I dont think theyd let me take my birds into that environment. hehe.

I've never had to handfeed babies; have a lot of good parents. Otherwise, the fids do fine without me. Would love to have more time with them, but not an option & they are all much better off with each other in my house than where they were before. Have a sitter for the cats and birds when I need to travel on business. I'm working on being two places at once, but haven't quite mastered it

I too will be going to work soon. I know my older birds will be just fine throughout the day, as I have been letting them alone every other day to get use to it and they actually seem to enjoy having days of just play in the bird room.

I will be breeding this season both IRN and Quaker, but I have a back up if I happen to not get a local job, Erik the breeder friend of mine will take on the babies and allow me to come for the feeds I will be able to make. He is actually very interested (and in a way hope it happens) because he will end up keeping some of them for himself.

I think, so long as I let them all annoy me over doing my hair and having breakfast and then have them out while they clean up the leftovers on the dinner plate, things will be fine. Also, my children arrive home early from school and they are all very socialised with my fids, so they will play and feed them also.

Plus .. Hubby comes home every day from work for lunch (he is a doteing daddy to the fids) so .. I guess things will be just fine for me and my birds.

:D

I work close to home. I come home for lunch and am home about 5.30 each day. I am about to start a new job in July and that is 50/50 home and office work so I will soon be spending more time with my little terror. heheh

Isn't there anyone else at your house? I mean if you are away that "anyone else" can play and interact with your fids so that they wont be lonely.

My guys stay home alone a lot. I work full time and my partner averages 55 hours a week... but weekends are fid time and they get snuggles every night.. We find they enjoy "their time" as much as we enjoy our time away from them. Of course their cages are FULL of toys and new ones come often.. and they chat to each other all day. I don't think they are neglected or even worry that we are not always there, its always been that way so they are used to it.

I used to manage a pet store so they came to work with me on occasion but now I work in a call centre its not possible, they dont seem to mind though.

My job is pretty flexable as far as time goes so If I need to I can come home at lunch to feed bubs. but lately I've been covering the late shift on the reception desk soo by the time I get home it's dark cos the days are shorter I havent seen my babies for a week!! I have no idea how many eggs my sunny has (or has eaten) I'm glad this is only temporary.

I'd like to have a part time job close to home again I dunno what I'm going to do when we come into breeding season :p

I work full time advertising Real Estate so sometimes it means some long days. I find that I like to wake up extra early and get a good hour with Wasa before I go making sure all of his seed and water is fresh even giving him some fresh fruit that he has with me while i have a cuppa, so we kind of have brekky together. Luckily I do not live far from work so I come home at lunch and then we have another hour together before I then go back to work. He has heaps of toys in his cage and when I get home he is just so excited to see me that we get to spend real quality time together in the evening... he just loves hanging out with me then.

My job is an hour drive away from my house. But I always talk to Indie and Jasmine in the morning before I leave. and I turn the music on for them. Its just routine and Indie is very good at being able to play by himself during the day. I think he is just used to it. I work full time, but with the hour drive both ways it feels like I am working more. But I just make time for them when I get home. Indie has come to expect, sometimes demands it, when I get home that he gets let out and feed his fresh veggies. Again its jut routine.
But just like Datsun said, when weekends hit, its the fids time to get even more attention out of me.
I think if they are used to it, then its no big deal to them.
What really throws Indie off is when I am off one day during the week and I go let him out instead of just talking to him.

But if I had any more then what I do, I don't think I would even be able to find time to work.
I don't know how anyone else how has more birds then 2 can keep up.

You just do the best you can!

My fids are almost all rescues, and they are safe, well fed, have more toys and siblings than they ever could imagine......

I have work that has sometimes different hrs each week. I am always home for lunch and once home at 5.30pm (or before sometimes) Bono is let out of the cage.
I have a flatmate who is home sometimes more than me during the day keeps Bono company .Actually Bono has bonded well with her too...

Bono has at the least 2hrs freedom from his cage.
When he was younger I left a radio going when I wasnt home...

Fortunately I work at a pet store and take my little guy with me on occasion. I am careful to stay away from the other animals when he is with me and I wash my hands sore, but it's worth the time! I also live close enough to my work to come home for my lunch. I've tried to spend time with him when I work late nights but his bedtime is at 9pm and if I try to mess with him at 11pm he lets me know with a few sharp bites that this is not the time for cuddles!
