Post by Milamber3790 »

i dont remember which post it was in but someone was talking about IRNs moulting when they get their ring. what is this like? like a dog that sheds hair everywere?(mum wud probably kill Jaws if that happened)
or is it one feather at a time? or is it just the ring changing colour?
just curious

P.S. wile im here i'd like to say that:
Jaws rocks!!! hes the best IRN in the world!!!! and he is soo kwl!!!!
and it's been at least 5 months since i got him but every day is like the first. exiting and kwl and full of fun(exept wen i have skwl...)

Harper and the best IRN in the world.

Aww. You must really love your Jaws.

Moulting is the process of replacing damaged and old feathers with new ones. Usually a bird will moult once a year and it may take weeks maybe months. The bird may loose alot of feathers at one time and can look a lil 'scruffy' with short spike like pins. These are the new feathers. Never break these or cut them! Also they can be irritating for the bird and your bird may not want you to touch them. I know my Jibs hates me touching him when hes moulting. You will probebly find alot of lil white fluffy feathers around everywhere! These are down feathers. I'm forever vacuuming these up. But still its not as bad as dog or cat hair.

Have fun with Jaws. :D

I'm not so sure about that.......of course I have two cats and almost 40 birds, so maybe it is not a fair comparison (but going to work with cat hair on you is much less bizarre than looking like your pillow burst at some point during the night)

Hmm, maybe I was a lil lite on that one. Sorry cat lovers, I understand your love for them but I just can't seem to be comfortable with cats. I find downies easier to deal with than fur balls for some reason. You should see my stairs to my unit. Fur balls everywhere from next doors cat. Sorry, I probebly should of added 'I' find them not as bad as cat/dog hair.

Not a probelem -- there are cat people, dog people and fools like me that would buiild an ark and get multiples of everything. Sounds like your neighbors don't do a whole lot of brushing -- mine leave fur everywhere but not many "chunks" (uh...cats, not neighbors).

When the parrot moults...there will be feathers but if you clean the cage daily and vaccum almost everyday it ought to be controlable. Feathers are enivatable when owning parrots

Thats true Dani, cleaning is an everyday thing when having parrots. Feathers feathers feathers.. I like to collect the tail feathers. I've got a bunch of Jibs baby tail feathers still from 6 years ago! But Yoda hasn't lost any yet.

Next door has 2 cats, ones a kitten and the other is a very fat cat. I think it could be the fat cat because it sits in the stairs all day. The kitten loves to sit at my balcony window and play with Yoda.

aprox how long does this moulting thing last for?
mum will probably think the bird has malaria! shes always complaining how unclean he is! :( but in truth the bird is the cleanest prsn in the house, he's always preening himself and stuff.
at least Jaws doesnt poo on the ground and sit in it like the dog does...

I don't exactly know if there is a time frame of moulting. Ive just noticed it can take a few weeks up to 2 months to complete. From my experience.
Maybe someone knows exactly how long? not sure.

Oh dear. Birds are very clean animals. When I took Yoda home he was a lil messy in the feathers but soon cleaned up after a few baths. I know my fids hate having messy feet. It really irritates them.

My Jibs turns around and stares at his poops. Weird.

hahahaha yeh i think jibs needs therapy...
and another one of my endless questions... u now how a birds beak can b all shiny and scratch-free and then all ugly and scraped all ova suden? and sometimes the red on Jaws' beak kinda goes away. iit's hard to explain but mainly its just how his beek can look all messy one day and clean and shiny the next day, then messy and scratched again. i thought that it mite have somthing to do with diet but that's a wild guess... or it cud b simply him crunching on a toy a bit too hard.

Me too.. any birdy shrinks around? Weird birdy.

I wouldn't worry about scratches on the beak. They naturally wipe their beaks on surfaces, to clean and it can also feel good to them. They also like to chew because it sharpens and strengthens their beaks. Colour loss in the beak can be something they are lacking in the diet. It should be fine if Jaws is getting alot of different vegies and fruit. A good variety in the diet is good. I've noticed Jibbys beak and feathers are looking alot more vibrant and coloured since I put him on pellets. But if its loosing alot of colour maybe take Jaws to the avian vet just to make sure everythings alright.

its not realy scratches, more like nails with red nailpolish thats cracking off , around the edges of the beak... but then a day or two later he's back to normal...

he does get a fair bit of vegies... i dont put any in his cage cos he makes a hell of a mess. but usualy in the morning i'l quarter an apple and give him some, or a pear... he realy likes grapes cos they are small and he can hold on to em... i have to admit that some days i forget to give him any greens but that wud b a one off ocasion...

How old is Jaws?

My 7 month old Yodas beak was doing that but now it seems Yodas beak has grown and strengthened (I'm getting stronger bites). Its like Yoda had a growth spirt. Maybe Jaws is just growing? Also might need calcium in the diet. I bought a calcium/ iodine perch, also Yoda gets alot of brocolli.

Jaws... cant remember exactly how old he is but the petshop said he was born in july sometime... so he'd be maybe 10/11 months old.
growth spirt aye? i think he's anready at full size or sumfin. thats wat the petstore said anyway.
Jaws isn't too into brocoli, i eat more of it than he does. he just bites the funny lil nobs on the top and spits them everywere.
maybe i'l buy one of them iodine thingos, but the petstore isnt the best in the world. they dont have heeps of bird stuff.

Jaws was pissed off with me today. i had to go down to melbourn for afew days. mate of mine died of cancer :(
left Jaws with the next door neighbors. they are good people but dont no much about birds, i told them the essentials watch him wen he's outside, dont feed him avocado, change his water regularly, ignore bites etc. but i think Jaws got pissed off i left him, (only for 3 days).

they said he was a fantastic bird and all, i'v noticed that when i'm not around he is much nicer with other people. when i went to darwin i left him with mum and she said he stopped biting her and he had been adorable. but as soon as i got bak he started hating her again. i think he things i aint gona come bak so he better suck up to other people.
does anyone elses bird do this?
this is just a stupid question and i dont really care anyway, but it interests me kinda... lol not making sence...

So sorry to hear of your friend. Must of been hard for you to loose a friend. :(
I think my Jibby is nice to people when I'm not around too. He bonded to my lil sister when I left him for a year to travel. But he really didnt have problems coming back to me. Jibs hates everyone new to him but if he sees you often he thinks your ok and 'accepts' you. He's always accepted my family though so if I have to I can leave him with them and I know he'll be happy.

Yoda likes to eat the stem of the brocolli and Jibs only likes the lil green ends. Brocolli is Jibs favourite vegie but I wont touch brocolli. Ick!

You can buy the calcium/iodine perches online if you cannot find them in a pet store near you. Pet stores are very overpriced aswell I've noticed. I could easily spend 100 dollars on just a few items!
