toenails
Hi,
I know this is an IRN website, but I'm hoping you guys can give me some insight on whether this is normal or not? My father took my mother's canary to the pet store to get his toenails clipped b/c they were long and after the man had cut one foot, the canary starting bleeding from the mouth and died. I can't say how upset and shocked we all are. The bird seem to be very stressed/scared when the man was doing it. He was even singing in the car on the way there. Has anybody ever heard this happening before? Now I'm going to be really scared to take my IRN to get his wings and toenails clipped. Please let me know what you all think about this. Very upset, Michelle

I do my sisters canarys feet. I would really try to learn to do this kind of stuff on your own, I know it may seem scary but at least with canary feetses you hold the bird up to the light and you can SEE where the quick is. In Ringnecks you arent so lucky, but at least after having a look at canary feet you have something to guess by.
I'm sorry to hear about your bird.

Now see... it would be something like this that will end me up in prison.
*takes her meds*
I dont have to tell ya'll I would have seriously hurt that man, had it been my Baby. Cant function in society when it comes to stuff like that... I'll take somebody out. Truth is, ya'll probably know it.
I just couldnt handle that. Not a big enough person.
Im so sorry for your loss.
MazziesMom knows her stuff. Been around birds a long time. I trust in her opinion 100%. As sad as it is. It is about all that makes sense.
My bird had a heart attack and she looked no differently than when she was alive. I thought she was drinking alot that day because everytime I looked over, she was drinking.
I didnt realize she had the attack there and fallen over.

Thank ya'll!!! I'm so sad about the little bird. He was so.... happy. The pet store owner has been cutting toenails for 20 years, that's why I don't understand it. And I feel horrible b/c I insisted that my dad take the canary to get them clipped (they were curling under). I even refused to let the woman that worked there do it b/c she did not have much experience. I could just cry!!! Michelle
Sadly, canaries are much harder to clip than parrots. I know, sounds weird, but the songbirds are very delicate birds. You cant even clip their wings, because a fall to the chest can kill them.
I had to help my friend who owns a pet store clip the finches one afternoon, and she had to teach me a whole new way to hold birds to do it. I've never had songbirds, so never had to do it... and was shocked at just how delicate they are.

That man KNOWS what he did.
Not to admit it is really pissing me off as much as the tramatic event itself.
DEMAND a new bird. Not ask... DEMAND one and if it were me, if would be one of my chosing.
Thats the LEAST he cant do... he knows what he did. He just thanks God you dont... until now.
He lacked the decentcy to even feel remoreseful. *fumes*

I've said it once and I'll say it for the rest of my life...... PEOPLE SUCK! I can't even imagine that. If I did that to someone elses bird I would be MORTIFIED! I would not be able to live with myself. And I would insist they take a bird! I'm so sorry Michelle! Your poor parents. Give them big hugs from all of us on the board.
Hugs,
Jen

Steady people. WE are only saying it was a POSSIBILITY.. The bird could have been sick or may have had something else wrong with it. Canaries are hardy birds and if the man had been doing it for a long time before that then it does seem a little less likely that he did cause it.
We all want answers but sometimes you will just NEVER KNOW. I will never know why my red rump died, or why my female japanese quail and her babies died. I will never know why Chibi's mother didnt feed him.
As tempting as it is to latch onto the most plausable answer, It may not be the truth.
And even if he DID do it, it was an accident, there's no need for you all to get angry and riled up. I'll admit that I have killed a few birds accidently.

*sighs* I suppose you're right Neo...hehehe we can get carried away sometimes. Best thing to do probably would have been to get a necroscopsy (spelling?) done but I don't know if the cost would outweigh the cost of a new bird.
Neo you always are the level-headed one here...guess we need that

Neo,
As Dani said, you're right. We just get fired up when one of ours is hurt! We're protective! It's good to have you and your level thinking ways around! You balance us out. Cuz I'm sure Mik would have us hunting him down and throttling him! Tee hee. And we'd all have been right behind her, until your calming, level headed voice told us to wait a minute! So thanks.

Jen

A voice of reason.
I think its alot harder for us that dont breed to understand the trials and tribulations that go along with it.
Neo is right and I respect her post very much.
Breeders, like Drs realize birds die on a day to day bases whereas we think of them filling our lives with love for decades with no worries.
We have a right to be mad at the event, perhaps not the person.

Very sorry to hear of such a loss.
Very sorry to hear of such a loss, my condolences.
Get another bird from the guy and then take the bird for a well bird checkup to an avian vet; get the vet to show you how to trim the beak, nails and feathers. Buy the special shaped scissors and start doing the trims yourself. It is very easy and there is no pain to the animal though it may not be particularly pleased with being manhandled.
But I think it is really important to learn how to trim your pets.

For all of you that are so worked up, don't worry, I'm right there with you'll. There are many of you all that sound just like me. Neo, you're right, we will never really know. I just keep crying everytime I think of that little bird and how happy he was. I am going to talk to the man, but I KNOW if he refuses to give my mother another bird, I'm going to lose it with him. I hope he does the right thing. I will keep you'll posted on his response. Thank you all for your support. It's appreciated!!!! Michelle
For those of you that are keeping up with the story. I just called the man on the phone and stayed very calm and cool. I told him what I thought. He says that it was not his fault and will sell one to me half off, for $35. Whether it was his fault or not, I think that is very bad business. The fact is, our bird died in his hands so that's the least he could do. He said he will talk to some other people so I told him to get back with me. You know, I would rather spend 30 more dollars than buy a bird from him. Michelle
