Joey is Molting?

Post by JoeysMom »

Hello everyone,

A few days ago I began to notice Joey feathers on the floor. Since then, the volume of feathers on the floor has increased. I am not 100% sure of Joey's exact age, but her "estimated" hatch date is April 11, 2013. I know that her hatch date is close to this, as it marks the day the her clutch-mates started to hatch. That would make her about five months old. Is this normal? It seems early to me... :?

Do you see the little pin feathers peeking out? If so, then it's a moult. Because most of our birds live inside, our heating/air-conditioning, lighting, etc. can influence how often they moult and can trigger them early or late. :)

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay

Yes, she has plenty of pins. She looks scraggly as well. I was just worried that she was a bit early for her first molt. So far it is mainly just the head, and upper body. She has not lost any wing or tail feathers yet.
