:( Thinking im a horrible IRN owner :(

Post by xx_sheena_xx »

As you may, or may not, know I got my first handraised IRN not last christmas, but the christmas before.
When i got her she was only slightly friendly, but i kept getting her slightly better and then she kept getting worse again. Now she hates me, wont let me touch her, talk to her, nothing :(

In july Gluttony was born, his the bub of my dads IRN's. He was the only bub to survive. I handraised him from 2 weeks old and i was aloud to keep him. He would let me do anything to him, hug him, pat him, kiss him, put him on his back, and he always wanted to be with me. In the last couple of months he is becoming not as friendly. He lets me kiss him, and he chews on my finger nails but thats about it. His always been really scared of new things and i thought that was because he was raised by himself.

ATM im really sad, I know ringneck make terrific pets but maybe im not the right owner for one?
I have a conure, have had her for 2 years now, and shes still as friendly to me as the day i got her.
I am really thinking about putting Gluttony in an averie cause there is no way i could sell him! But it would be heartbreaking :(

its a faze they go through. Indie has his days where he acts like a feral and lunges at the bars on the cage like he wants blood  he gets the look like the smilies. And then he is perfectly fine.I just give him a little space and then interact with him and he is fine. I think they are like people where some days they are just plain in a bad mood.I wouldnt give up on him yet.

Thanks guys :)
I didnt think it was a hormonal thing cause his only 6 months but that explains it... my conure bites me more and regurgutates to my fingers and toes

I didnt want to give up on him, i love him so much! and IRN's are my favourite birds. My dad also told me once if Gluttony goes "feral" then he wouldnt breed them anymore cause acording to him if i cant keep Gluttony friendly no one can keep IRN's friendly :?

Im probaly very pananoid!

Thanks for helping :)

Mine are scared of other people - especially tradies (although I'm working on it!)!

mine are scared of balloons. But mine have been to school for show and tell and my chicks have been away camping with a heap of kids so they are pretty well socialised and used to noises and kids running around and motorbikes ect.Mika in particular loves the tv, especially the GO channel ads where they sing Hello hello.

Gluttony should be used to all the things you mentioned if its everyday things.

Hey Sheena,

That’s okay your ringneck is scared of many things as it’s how these parrots are. Ringnecks are neophobic meaning they are scared of new objects usually—perhaps this is why they are so successful at surviving in the wild?

Slowly work through these problems with your parrot and build confidence with him. I believe you should start a positive reinforcement program. Archimedes acts just like your little guy if the ironing board comes near him—look for objects that could be scaring the bird and remove them. Once you find it, you’ll see a night and day difference.

Hope that helps!

Hane is terrified of his big ladder when it isn't connected to his playstand. He will climb on it, up and down, having fun... but only if it's connected! If one of the dogs knocks it off and I go pick it up to put it back, he freaks out and takes off in the other direction. Once I hook it back on he calms right down. Go figure.
