Ringneck chick with broken leg

Post by ImpulseParrots »

Hi

I'm new to this forum so sorry if this is in the wrong spot....

I do alot of hand raising of various birds, with ringnecks being the majority in the brooder. I picked up some new chicks on Friday from a breeder and when I got them out to give them a feed, one had what I thought was splayed legs. I put a splint on and hoped for the best. Tonight I took the splint off to change it and took a closer look at the leg. From what I can tell, it seems like its leg might have been broken shortly after hatching because its well and truely fused, just at the wrong angle and it has little to no grip in that foot. It doesnt seem to be in pain, it just cant support its self.

I'm not sure what I should do about it as its already fused the bones together (with a lump of bone at that point) and I live in rural Qld, about 3 hours away from any bird vet. Is it something that could even be fixed??

Thanks in advance

Amy

if you have found it early you can put a spilt on the leg using a little stick and some tape
but if its been like that for a while it probaly wont heal without seeing a vet
