We also keep reptiles and always have live foods about so I was wondering if it would be okay to feed the Alexes live foods such as mealworms and waxworms as part of their protein needs?
Would you feed these as a treat, part of the main diet or not at all?
Thanx
I did read somewhere that in the wild, seed eating birds do eat insects as well. I did give my hand raised IRN meal worms (which she absolutly loved) till I was told that mealworms can eat the insides of their stomach if the bird has not killed them But I don't know if that was just a old wives tale or not.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it. I do have to admit to not killing before I feed to my Beardies ... not too sure if I should start now. But have known black crickets to bite the inside of one of the beardies mouth and made it bleed ... alot.
I think I may give the wax worms a try first and see how we go from there.

I have read in a few books that IRN as well as most birds in the wild will and do eat insects as part of their diet. But mostly, the birds eat seeds and fruit. I guess it is what is available to them at the time. If ya hungry gotta eat something.
the same is for human too
in africa some indigent people eat insects and others eat rats and trushes and others even human meat,
but .... we dont give such food to our children
