Meal worms/ wax worms

Post by ~~TC~~ »

We also keep reptiles and always have live foods about so I was wondering if it would be okay to feed the Alexes live foods such as mealworms and waxworms as part of their protein needs?
Would you feed these as a treat, part of the main diet or not at all?
Thanx

I did read somewhere that in the wild, seed eating birds do eat insects as well. I did give my hand raised IRN meal worms (which she absolutly loved) till I was told that mealworms can eat the insides of their stomach if the bird has not killed them  But I don't know if that was just a old wives tale or not.

From what I've read, you want to feed mini-meals or immature ones (before they get their pincers). But that's all I know, lol.

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay

Makes you wonder, doesn't it. I do have to admit to not killing before I feed to my Beardies ... not too sure if I should start now. But have known black crickets to bite the inside of one of the beardies mouth and made it bleed ... alot.

I think I may give the wax worms a try first and see how we go from there.

I have read in a few books that IRN as well as most birds in the wild will and do eat insects as part of their diet. But mostly, the birds eat seeds and fruit. I guess it is what is available to them at the time. If ya hungry gotta eat something. :)
