Can you house multiple breeding partners together

Post by Glen.D »

I'm about to inherit either 3 or 4 breeding pairs, can you house multiple breeding pairs in the one cage.

Cage dimenssions, 8m (24ft) long, 2.4m (8ft) wide and 2.7m (9ft) high.

Thanks

Normally it would be a better not but in the cage that size, I've no idea. But even then 3 or 4 could be pushing the limit. It depends on how the birds regard it, I guess. If they think there is strength in numbers to protect their young, then you wouldnt have a problem. If however they think, theres going to be competition for food and the more safe/comfy parts of the aviary, then you're in for trouble.

Its just my opinion :) I'm sure other people will be able to shed more light on it.

All of my birds live in one aviary. Just prior to breeding time each pair reconnects, after chicks are completely weaned they have very little to do with their partner bird for a few months. They choose a nestbox and settles in for the season. There is only fighting between two pairs, my first pair and the second pair which the female is the daughter of the first pair. I guess mothers and daughters don't always get along! We have a seperate little aviary attached and seperate these two pairs only during breeding season, the rest of the time the adjoining door is open and they all fly freely in between both sections.

so far they have got along really well, so by the sounds of it breeding season could be a time to keep a close eye on them.

thanks

Here are some films from this past years breeding. You may want to watch them. I keep a seperation between the boxes, and make sure that the boxes face different dirrections.

The 3 pairs have been housed in the same avary for the past couple of months and seem to get on fine.
