Cobalt Hen

Post by Lushen1600 »

Hi I recently purchased a cobalt hen, but don't have genetic history for this female, wanted to know why she has so much of a greyish wash throught her upper body, and even on close inspection of her tail feathers, I noticed that the right half of the main tail feather is darker than the left half. Can anyone explain why, is this normal for a cobalt?

Thanks

So I guess this would be normal for a cobalt?

I wouldn't know if it were normal for a Cobalt, but I wanted to say that when I first saw your pic without reading the text, I thought the hen was a Violet and the cock a Cobalt (just goes to show that pics can be deceiving).

Nice pair :)

Hi Chocobo, thanks for the reply, the male is a dominant edge blue cinnamon.

The hen was hatched from a batch of eggs from foster pairs, so that why I don't know the genetic history of this bird, as the breeder got the eggs from another breeder and use his pairs to hatch out these eggs.

Will try and take some better pics of her later today

Thanks

Those are better - do you think she might have something else as well? I noticed that when I picked up one of the tail feathers-not central of my Green, that half the feather (split down the middle of the shaft) was a different colour to the other side- maybe normal for the wildtype- but will check my Blue and let you know if it is the same for him.

edit- nope- same colour for him on both sides of feather shaft
