please help explain

Post by Farzz1 »

Hi all
I trust all is well
May i ask for some advice i have paired a blue turq cock bird with my turq cobolt violet hen
i have had 4 chicks produced
1- violet sf
2- cobolt
3- blue lacewing
3- cin violet lacwing hen

I have established that the cock is split cin and lacewing ,however my query is what happen to the turq none of the chicks have turq in them?
the genetic calculator produced this result chicks with all turq

1.0 turquoise(parblue) /cinnamon-pallid
x 0.1 DD turquoise(parblue) violet(df)

% from all 1.0
1.5%1.0 D turquoise(parblue) violet(sf) /cinnamon
48.5% D turquoise(parblue) violet(sf) /pallid-cinnamon
48.5% 1.0 D turquoise(parblue) violet(sf)
1.5% 1.0 D turquoise(parblue) violet(sf) /pallid

% from all 0.1
1.5% 0.1 D turquoise(parblue) violet(sf) pallid
1.5% 0.1 D turquoise(parblue) violet(sf) cinnamon
48.5% 0.1 D turquoise(parblue) violet(sf)
48.5% 0.1 D turquoise(parblue) violet(sf) pallid cinnamon

You have the cock right but you have input Mauve DF Violet TurquoiseBlue for the hen. I think you mean't Dark Violet TurquoiseBlue. Some TurquoiseBlues take awhile before you see it. In any event you would breed 25% non-TurquoiseBlues. I would rid yourself of that cock unless you want to keep breeding those bleached faded birds that Cinnamon and Pallid do to Blue series birds. Also all your non Pallid non Cinnamon cocks will be possible splits for Pallid and/or Cinnamon and would be worthless really in Australia anyways.

Hi Farzz,

Before going further I need some more information:
1. Are both the cock and the female parents showing the same (or similar) turquoise pattern or one of them is "greener" than the other?
2. Do you know who are the parents of your cock? You are accepting a type 1 linkage between cinnamon and pallid ... but it seems that your offspring show both possibilities (quite rare event). The Blue Lacewing (Blue Pallid) chick should be a female ... and probably she also is cinnamon like her sister if the cock is split Cin and Pallid in type 1 linkage.
3. Are you sure that your female is DF violet? ... and DF Dark? ... and homozygous turquoise?
Probably she is SF Dark TurquoiseBlue SF Violet. Try to check for her parents.

Regards

Recio
PS: A pic of the parents and chicks should help a lot.

I agree a rare event
the Cock was borrowed to pair the hen as her mate died unfortunatly the cock was split for cin and pallid i do not know any more of the cock as the breeder has now relocated however the hen is is mine bought initaly as a turq cobolt however she producet a violet 2 seasons ago and a cobolt violet , but the bigger picture is that both birds are turq i should have all the offspring turq which still baffils me . The hen i have it paired with the son the descriptionnof the hen would be a turq cobolt violet hen and the son is a cobolt violet .strangly 2 seasons ago she was paired with a blue split opaline and herself i also did not produce a turq just a violet sf cock and a cobolt violet cock. just a mind boggler

Not according to the genetics calculator- I get 100% Turquoise Blue offspring from both parents being Turquoise Blue, and 100% Turquoise Blue offspring from one parent being a Turquoise Blue and the other being Blue...Not having a go, but is the calculator wrong?

The problem with Gencalc is the unintuitive way they deal with Parblues. For a heterozygous Turquoise or TurquoiseBlue you have to tick the "visual" box for Turquoise as well as the "splits to" box for Blue. The logical way would be to tick the "splits to" box for both Turquoise and Blue as there is only a single gene for each involved however it doesn't let you do this. I believe you are just ticking the "visual" box for Turquoise which is in fact a homozygous or df Turquoise.

There is no space between the names when they are alleles. TurquoiseBlue NOT Turquoise Blue. For the homozygous Turquoise the official name is just Turquoise which of course is used by most for the heterozygous. That is why I use "df Turquoise" to make myself clear.

many thanks- this clears things up a lot (: I was also not aware that you could have sf and df 'Turquoise'.

Hi all, nothing is wrong with the calculator, as pointed out by Trabots the initial calculation was entered wrong as the hen was entered as a mauve violet turquoise insteade of a cobalt violet turquoise.

Second mistake that was made was that both birds were entered as

turquoise(parblue)

instead of

turquoise(parblue)Blue

And that's why your results are showing all turquiose chicks.

So for the correct calculation here are the results
First with using T1

1.0 turquoise(parblue)Blue
x 0.1 D turquoise(parblue)Blue violet(sf)
% from all 1.0
1.75% 1.0 D blue
1.75% 1.0 D blue violet(sf)

Hi all
I agree that there could have been an incorrect insertion in the calc but the results output majority is turq common what the odds of having 4 chicks that are not turq as also said the cock is nothing compaired to the pic displayed the cock is more blue and the hen is more cobolt violet both birds have less turq would that influence the result of the offspring been no turq? Lushen the calculations give a result with majority turq however read the result posted by myself explaining that none of the chicks have turq in them

Hi Farza the reason that you are getting all turquoise chicks in your calculations, is because once again you are entering the birds wrong in the calculator. When entered correctly it will show

Turquoise(parblue)Blue

And not

Turquoise(parblue)

So in order to enter blue turquoise correctly you will not merely tick turquoise(parblue) under visual as you are doing but also tick blue under split and this will give you the correct results. The calculator percentages are worked out per 100 chicks born and even if there is a 1.75% chance of breeding a particular mutation, you can have all 4 chicks be this mutation in a clutch, so its not impossible to breed all chicks that do not show turquoise in one clutch from 2 turquoise parents

Also to keep in mind that in some instance it takes the bird a while for the turquoise to start showing and the turquoise becomes more prominant with each moult. So what may look like a blue bird now may actually turn out to be a blue turquoise a couple months down the line

Hope this helps, if you are still confused, please let me know and I will show you with pics how to enter your birds into the genetic calculator

Thanks
