Hello,
My violet cock (not split to anything as far as I know) and blue dominant pied hen (at least thats what I was told she was when I bought her) had 5 chicks. They are about 2 weeks old. One has red eyes. What does this mean. Does it simply mean the baby is going to be a dominant pied?
Thanks for the help!

Re: Pied mutation baby question?
If your baby turns out to be albino then your male is split ino.
And the baby will be female.
If not then its a pied baby. which will be blue or blue violet.
Thanks Glenn

Okay thanks. What about the possibility of the male being split to pallid?

Also, I went to check the box today and it looks like the few feathers that are coming in are white/cream colored. The others all have seem to have darker feathering coming in. Does this basically mean its going to be an albino or do blue and violet pallids start out with white/cream feathers?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Pied mutation baby question?
Red eyed birds bred from black eyed parents can mean that :
1. The parent cock bird is /ino or pallid ie sex linked .
2. The both parents are /nsl ino ie recessive albinism.
3. The both parents are /fallow ie recessive inheriting.
Dom pied are normal black eyed birds unless mated to any of the above three to produce a combination mutation.
In your case it is likely that number 1 applies. This can mean that the red eyed bird can be albino or lacewing hen. This can mean that the bird could mask the pied effect and will have to be test mated to prove itself. Wait a day or two and post a pic. I am sure we will identify it then.

Re: Pied mutation baby question?
Ok thanks for the reply. I will post a picture within the next couple days. Another question... I am going to pull the 5 chicks to hand feed here at 2 weeks. I plan on using the paper cup method. It will be my first time hand feeding but Ive done plenty of research so I feel pretty good about it. How soon after I pull the babies from the nest and have them in the brooder should I feed them for the first time? A breeder told me to give them a 24 hour period before I feed them. Isn't that going to starve them?
Also any tips for a first time hand feeder would be appreciated!
Thanks for any replies

As soon as the crop empties.
