I once saw a violet grey irn a few years ago. Visually a completely normal grey bird. As the bird was /for opaline the owner kept and bred with this. Only at producing of violet offspring did he realize the genetic makeup of the bird.
Masking color still remains a mystery as I am not certain if masking can vary depending on individuals. Ie some may mask color completely whilst others may show a hint of masking.
One specimen cannot be used as a standard.

Hi Molossus,

Yer most of that i had already found out i was more interested at the violet DF side of the bird.

Now if this bird i am talking about was also WH/WT is there more or less chance of seeing the violet? Possibly in the base of the tail or neck!
I imagine it probably doesnt make a difference.

Thanks Glenn

It could be all the difference in confirming the makeup of young untested birds. What about testing the bird under ultra violet lighting? A friend of mine once mentioned conducting such a trial on violets and cobalts to verify color identity. If you like I could get in touch with him in a few days?
