how do you know if they are trying to talk??
Sirius has started to ... hmmm .. how to explain, its not a singing sound or a call kind of a whisper.. as if he isrubbing his beak together but making a definite range of throaty sounds.
He seems to do it after we speak to him in response to us in the same rhythm, is this him/her trying to speak?? or just something they do??
ok daft question... talking???

I've only had my IRN a week today, and he makes a chunnering noise. Like he's rubbing his beak together alongside some extra pops. Weird. But I also don't know if it's weird or not.

Your birds are probably experimenting with the sounds they can make and are most likely wanting to imitate the sounds you make and are figuring out how they can achieve that.

Re: ok daft question... talking???
the way i knew when Fidgit was trying to talk was from watching videos on youtube of other ringnecks talking.
i dont know if it is the case, but to me it seems like that all irns sound the same when they talk, but i dont know if thats just me or not.
but if you watch the videos of them talking and you will notice when your bird is trying to talk because the way the noise sounds it round about the same, and although they may not be forming the actual words, you can tell by the noise they are making that they are giving it a go.
well thats how i figured Fidgit was ready to talk anyway.
i hope this helps

thats awesome, dont you just feel so happy now?
i felt giddy for hours when Fidgit said "baby" when trying to say "hello baby"
the bummer for me though is that he hasnt said it again since, and doesnt even seem like he is trying to say it again.
i am happy to hear that your little friend is talking for you.
Cheers
