IRN Laying Eggs-but she's not a breeder bird

Post by jharvell »

My IRN Rusty recently began laying eggs. She is 4 years old.

Her first one was laid on April 3rd, and she didn't lay any more until April 8, followed by one on April 11 and one on April 13.

Her attitude is fine; she's not acting strange. She's eating and drinking, and not really paying much attention to the eggs.

Is this common for non-breeder birds? How many eggs will she possibly lay before she's done?

I'm worried she might become eggbound.

Thanks!

Hi there, where about is she laying the eggs?
At the bottom of her cage? Did she shred up paper etc to create a 'nest' for herself/
They usually lay about average 4 eggs. do not take them away from her as of yet, as it may encourage
her to lay more. unless they are cracked/broken, then remove them immediately.

If they are fine, leave them for a week or two and remove them from the cage,
usually things such as having a nest box etc encourages them to nest.
How old is she now?

Soorry i did not see if you mentioned it?

It could also be here age, can she see other birds? do you have other birds?

Some females live alone and never lay eggs, others lay each year, even though they are infertile.
Try give us a bit more details.
Make sure she has a mineral / calcium block, as she needs it to restore what is used everytime
she lays an egg, but she should be just fine.
