King Parrot in my backyard

Yesterday morning I was just about to leave the house and two King Parrots landed on the railing on our back patio. I slowly put a few sunflower seeds on the railing for them to eat. They didn't seem too scared of me. So then I put some in my hand and the gamer of the two (the male), actually ate them out of my hand! It was quite exciting! Just thought I'd share.

That must have felt great!!! The parrots here won't allow you anywhere near them :(

Yes, it was a bit weird, I suspect the birds were quite young and hadn't learned to be too afraid of people yet.

I love king parrots, they are always in my yard, and will come eat straight out of our hands! My neighbour has a pair of dulited kings in an aviary out the back so I think that is what attracts them. I love their red and green colours, they are so graceful with their chime note sounds.

Great - I didn't know their habitat extended to cooler areas like that - but I guess it makes sense that it would as I've seen them in colder areas of Queensland too.

I have a friend on Mount Dandenong (just outside Melbourne) who gets heaps of king parrots at her place. She puts seeds on her balcony, and even the adults are quite confident having people nearby when they come and eat them. I agree with you Ellie, it's always a special thing to see them, and I always go home thinking that Bug and Rufus are tiny in comparison!
