Thinking of breeding

Post by elaine »

I am fairly new to irns, but after reading some of the things on here, the love I have for my little one and seeing some of the photos of newborns on here, I want to breed. I would like to do as much research as possibe before I even start, so I woud like to be pointed in the right direction. Even if anyone knows links on here that can help me from the very beginning. Where do I start is my first question, what do the birds need in the way of cages and facilities, placement of cage - this is even before I buy the birds. Then how do I know I am getting a good breeding pair? What food do they need - or is it just the same as feeding the one I have now? Is there a breeding season? (sorry if this sounds a dumb question!) And then what do I do when the babies are born? I don't want to go into this blind so, as I said, I want all the info I can get before I even start. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks all in advance

Of the bat, lots of breeding information already on the Main Page of this forum: http://www.indianringneck.com

Feel free to browse around the earlier posts. Lots of juicy tidbits for the neophyte breeder.

I have suspended aviaries 70cm wide x 1m high x 1.5m long.
Nest boxes are about 25-30cm square x 50-60cm high.

Always buy young sexed birds from different breeders, i would recommend you don't buy breeding pairs as they are usually older than the breeder says and they come with lots of problems.
Breeding season is around June - November.

I feed mine fresh fruit and veg twice a day, and they all get seed once a day. I mix the seed myself, it is 3 parts Budgie seed : 1 part sunflower seed. A few weeks before breeding season is approaching, i up their fruit and veg and also give them more sunflower seed so it is about 3 parts Budgie seed : 1.5-2 parts sunflower seed.
When they have babies you have to give them heaps of fruit and veg.

I have a bit of info on my website http://www.doublejaviaries.bravehost.com/

I would buy from reputable breeders. Maybe see if shipping them to you is something you want to look into. I believe, though I'm not sure that the prices in Victoria are slightly higher than other places.

Here is another article too look at from Winged Wisdom
http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww57e.htm

I reccomend this Article index from Parrotchronicles.com not for breeding but take a look and see if your interested in any of the articles
http://www.parrotchronicles.com/departments/articleindex.htm

I would breed only if you want to keep the babies and I'd only breed a small number of pairs. Breeding season around here starts around august and finishes around november? Not %100 sure about that. but I know there is one around then :P

Jeremy:

Although you carry yourself like a very mature, educated man, I see you as this teenager that is WAY too smart for his own good. lol

Odd how we make people up huh?

Maybe its just the nick... Jeremy, sweet name so thats probably all it is because you have certainly never said or done anything to make me see you as being very young.

What can I say, you are mysterious.
