Time between egg laying

Post by alyce reilly »

Hi everyone, my female has layed her first egg today :) I was just wondering is it around 24 hours till she will lay another egg and how long till she has finished laying her clutch? This is the first time she has ever breed and i just want to make sure she is fine and doesnt get egg bound. Thank you

The usual time between eggs is 48 hours but it can stretch to 72 on occasions. I set my incubation time from egg no3, but sometimes there are 6 eggs, which means the young hatch over a week apart from 1st to last. You will know if the hen is egg bound, she will appear distressed and her rump will be very low and distended. The number of egg bound hens is very low in comparison to the no of hens breeding, so a lot of worry is for no reason. The problem is more common in young hens and in cold weather.
