Breeding outside normal season

Post by Sherjil »

Hi;

Summary about the climatic conditions :: I live in Pakistan which is the native homeland of ringneck parakeets. The normal breeding season for the wild ringnecks in this region is from Feb till May when the temperatures are moderate i.e. 20 to 30 C . However June and July are too hot when the temperatures rise to more than 45 C. Late July is the starting of the rainy season called monsoons and it continues uptill mid September. In the rainy season the temperatures keep on varying between 25 till 35 C and the air is a lot humid with little or no winds which makes it uncomfortable.

My question begins from here :: My lutino hen laid infertile eggs (without a mate) early Feb this year which I kept in the nest box so that she can sit on them and stop laying. She laid a total of four eggs & after about 15 days I threw away the eggs from the nest box and she stopped laying any further eggs.
Now I have brought her a blue male and both have been bonding as a pair since past one month. The hen and the cock both are visiting the nest box, preening each other etc etc. The hen used to be very aggressive but has slowly accepted the blue male and both are comfortable with each other. I recently saw both mating and seems that the probability of the arrival of eggs is very near now.

Q > Can any one please tell me if eggs will come at all or this is just a breeding ritual both birds are doing and will fade away. I am asking as to me the breeding season is over but I don't know if these birds can re-produce outside breeding season in captivity.

Q > If the eggs come; will they be fertile ?

Q> Any other complications that can happen when breeding outside season ?

I am keeping the birds in an outside aviary with ample space to fly.

My birds have only ever bred in the breeding season. I have seen them mating through out the year but they only ever lay in breeding season. I would wait till the next breeding season.

hey , finally a good news , my lutino hen laid two eggs during last few days... so one experience to share from my birds is that the hen will take around 2 to 3 months preparing the nestbox and spending time bonding with the male bird before finally laying eggs
