A SURPRISE IN THE NEST BOX

Post by kojak »

I had paired what I thought was a Blue cock to a Grey hen and they've produced 3 Blue and 1 Skyblue (Cinnamon Blue). I was expecting Blues and Greys!! I suspect my Grey hen is actually a Silver (she's a light grey with brownish coloured flight and tail feathers). Her parents are Blue/Cinnamon cock and Golden Olive hen - is it possible to get a silver hen from this mating? And if so, can I get the Skyblue from a Blue cock to a Silver hen mating? Or would the Blue male have to be split to Cinnamon?? Hope someone can help me!!

It sounds like you have a Blue/Cinnamon Cock x Silver Hen

From this pairing you will get:

Cocks:
Blue/Cinnamon
Skyblue
Grey/Cinnamon
Silver

Hens:
Grey
Blue
Silver
Skyblue

Thanks for your quick reply. So does that mean that the hen and cock both need to have the Cinnamon gene to get the Skyblue chick??

Cinnamon is sex linked.

For example:
Say you had a Skyblue Cock with a Blue Hen.

All the baby Cocks would be Blue/Cinnamon and all the hens would be Skyblue.

If you reversed the pairing and had a Blue Cock with a Skyblue Hen you would get Blue/Cinnamon Cocks and Blue Hens.

Females cannot be split to sex linked mutations but Males can be.
