Hane also does not adore eating the greens. What I was trying to point out, MissK, is that while everyone can have an opinion, we have to acknowledge that there is no 'perfect' time to have a bird or a 'perfect' setup. The perfect setup for a bird is wild and free, not locked in a cage or house with only a few birds or humans for companions. ...

It might be bathing behaviour- have you sprinkled her with water yet? Most birds love baths, and starting early will help! You just want to make sure they have time to dry off before sundown and aren't chilled by draughts while wet.

Great thread! Is it recommended to use cuttlebone in the diet? Sorry if it's been asked before. Depends. If you use a pellet like Roudybush, the makers specifically say do not offer cuttlebone. Most people with breeders or perhaps females do offer cuttlebone to be used at the bird's discretion. I d...

The main rule when using paper is to make sure your bird isn't a paper-eater, as that could be lethal (some birds develop weird habits over time so just always keep an eye out for it; it is very rare). But if all your bird does is shred paper, then you can use plain paper, black and white newspaper,...

I would consider microchipping if I kept my birds outside. Here in FL, if your bird is stolen, you have the right to ask the police to scan a bird you see that you believe to be yours. If it's microchipped, you can prove it's yours. That's the value of microchipping here- and bird theft in FL (actua...

I'm not sure what to put on the floors to the cages. Are they outside or in, do you have wire bottoms or not? If they have wire bottoms, you probably don't need to put anything on the floor. When we used shavings in nests, we would compress them down very tightly. The hen will still kick some out and rearrange it all, but it would leave some in that way. Perhaps that would help?
It's great how far you're willing to go for Janey. They're wild animals, after all.

Rawhide bones are often used in larger parrot toys. I wouldn't worry about giving it, because your bird won't be able to drool all over it and soften it like a dog can. I just don't see the purpose in them, because they cannot be softened by your parrot or destroyed, so they won't keep your bird's a...
