Babysitter while out of town? what can (should) be done??

I do utility work. At any time i could be sent out of town to work for over a month. I've had my bird for a year and a half and luckily I haven't had to go out of town in that time, but it is a very real possibility. I don't have anyone I can trust with my bird for that period of time. I won't toler...

Re: Hi all from Melbourne Australia

wow, lucky to get one that's a fresh pick.. mine was already 6 months old when I got him and a bit rattled from being moved around place to place. Found him in a ratty little pet shop that smelled like cat urine. Despite all that he seemed mentally stable. He's turned out to be a great bird and lots...

Re: How long do you leave your IRN alone in its cage all day

My bird, Bell, is subject to my whims and the weather. I get up around 5:30 am to go to work. 6:00 am I send the bird outside to a large cage where he can actually fly around a little. (his house cage is small, the outside cage is 7ft tall, 8ft long, 6ft wide). So anyway, if I don't wake up early en...

Re: Screaming is getting worse!

Okay,.. admittedly I didn't read everything on this thread.

but to help reduce sceaming you might also try creating a YouTube playlist of Indian Ringnecks (and other birds) making interesting noises.

If nothing else it could teach your bird to make more pleasant sounds than just screaming

My bird is not a big talker either. I tried. I always said certain things at certain moments that he should be able to figure out but he never really repeated them.... with one exception When I would give him a treat i would say the word 'treat' when he would take it I would then say 'thank you' hop...

You can absolutely give your bird popcorn as long as it is unsalted, sugar free, and butter free

popcorn on the cob.. fresh from the stalk is probably best

plus it makes a great toy

Re: opinion on cages

If space is not an issue and you have the funds, then have one built. I have a nice walk in cage (it's just for outdoors though). Had I spent that same amount of money I could have gotten a large cage, but having it built from scratch (wood and wire basically) I was about to triple the size if not m...

Re: Top Ten Bird killers

I'm sure dry lips would be an acceptable compromise.

Long as your not giving your bird sloppy kisses... which... who does that!

and it's not like taking chewed up food and giving it the bird.

Surely kisses are okay.

I can always tell what kind of mood my one IRN is in by the amount of birds that come flying into the living room from the bird room shortly after I let them all out for playtime. She will kick them all out of the tree lol and they escape to me or to other perches in the house. :D and some of my bi...

Re: Top Ten Bird killers

I gave my bird the tough love treatment regarding ceiling fans. Once he was able to fly I turned off the ceiling fan. Later he started getting on it and chewing on it. So my solution was to turn it back on at a very slow rate. With it only slightly rotating he would fly up to it... sort of hover try...

Diary of an Indian Ringneck

From Bell's perspective: "Today I was once again awakened by that dreadful screaming sound. As always it was accompanied by the miserable groans of my captor as he begins to wake up. Then, I hear his feet hit the floor. Each day I wonder what will be done with me. Will I be kept isolated in th...

are these the same dandelions growing in my backyard... the ones that make the fuzzballs that little kids like to blow into the air?

My IRN, (Bell) always wants to see what's happening on my phone. I made the mistake of showing him lots of bird videos on it.. now he surfs youtube on his own. Re: Can I give my IRN a bit of biscuit?

Read up on tomatoes for birds. Some lists say don't feed it to them, and others say in small amounts.

Apples, blueberries, blackberries, grapes, and kiwi are all fruits that my bird seems to enjoy quite a bit.

Re: Timeline of your birds progression

I agree that they say what they want to say. Mine has been saying peekaboo regularly the last couple of days. First time I said it to him he seemed completely amazed by it. Even now he responds better to peekaboo than he does his name, (Bell). Also I heard that birds like the "k" sound and...

Re: Timeline of your birds progression

The most significant milestone with my IRN was him learning to fly. He was 6 months old when I got him and it took forever for his flight feathers to come in. (another 6 months) When he would try to fly he would just go straight to the floor. Then one day he tried to fly away I noticed he caught som...

Mine flies to my monitor and starts touching its face. And other pictures that people have posted get his attention too.

Mine responds well to almonds and peanuts, (tiny bits) but i'm trying to find an alternative because those aren't very good for them and they'll spoil his super.

It all boils down to the bird. Whatever makes him want to step up or fly to your other hand

One of the best tricks to teach a bird is Flight Recall, coming to you when you call him. I like it because it might help if he ever gets out. very easy to teach. Hold out a treat but have your other handd between him and the treat so he has to step up to get the treat, next time hold your hand furt...

I had to learn how to get my ringneck back to his cage. At first I would chase him around the room, telling him "go to your cage", eventually he would land on his cage and go in. I would praise him for it and give him a treat. Eventually he developed a sense of time and became easy to conv...

Mine gets excited when I sing. Also, during the day I leave the tv on children's programming. One day I came home and didn't bother changing the channel for a while. Shredding Foods (greens) Vs. Eating Them

My IRN loves broccoli and collard greens, but he doesn't actually eat them. He destroys them. He reduces them into confetti. Is he still getting the nutritional benefits? (I assume he is because if he were shredding up something poisonous it would make him sick, so by that thinking i suspect that sh...
