From an American point of view, I would be very interested to see your results. My violets come from an original violet blue hen (who I also have) produced by Gordon Hayes. Have you ever spent any time just sitting by the cage getting to know your bird? Offering treats? Teaching step up? These are vital steps in getting your bird to trust you. Sounds like your bird isn't quite there with trusting you, so lunges in defense. I'm assuming your bird is also clipped? This m...

Peter...I don't believe loo meant any harm towards dudes. Our feathered friends are highly inquisitive. Milk is really bad for birds. They lack the enzymes needed to break down the lactose. He most likely had an upset stomach, especially if it was cold, and it needed to work its way through his system.

Your breeding season is going to be dictated by the length of your winter. Normal breeding season for you would be from about late February through June. But if you have a harsh winter it may delay the season if they are outdoor birds. Indoors, you can count on feb through June. :D

I have heard of hand raised birds breeding. It's not ideal though. For your best chances I would move the male and hen into a different cage that neither of them has ever been in. And once breeding season begins have very little contact physically with the male. Hope it works out for you :)

Does your breeder insist on clipping before selling you a bird??? Recall training should be done by you after you get your bird. If its at all possible, ask that your bird remain flighted. It's not something you can train in just a few short sessions. It takes trust and time between you and your bird.
