Re: 2nd baby just hatched!...NOW A 3RD!!!

Hi :) Congrats on your 3rd baby!!! :D Breeding season in South Africa is normally between September and end of November. Last year I had an early batch though, in late August. It's so exciting to go to the aviaries and see the eggs and then when they start hatching I am like a proud mom, I can't co...

Re: 2nd baby just hatched!

You should check whether the remaining eggs are fertile by candling them. I normally leave them even if infertile, as I believe they help keep the chicks warm if/when the hen leaves the nest. The time between hatching differs depending on whether the hen started incubating early or late. If she star...

Re: Is this a deep blue aqua ?

By Oz cobalt I mean the Australian cobalt. It seems as if this bird is a dark blue in the DF, unlike the European cobalt that is mauve in the DF.

Re: Is this a deep blue aqua ?

Difficult to judge the colour when using indoor lighting with/without a flash. Take the first picture, my first impression was that it is a normal blue bird. Second and third picture looks like a dark factor blue. I'd go with cobalt, as I don't know much about the deep/Oz cobalt and have seen quite ...

Re: My website

Molossus, there is a picture of a "dhani green" ringneck on your website. Can you perhaps give some info on this bird, as I've not heard of the mutation before.

Can't wait to see the pictures! And don't forget, I'll be visiting your area end of April, so hopefully I'll be able to see them in person as well. :D

Re: Confused!

As mentioned, parBlue is a mess. The problem is that the same mutation gets different names in different regions (think lacewing/pallid, greyhead/opaline, etc.). In SA, we refer to it mostly as turquoise, not pastel. And aqua can also be thrown into the mix introduced by Rod. To add to this, turquoi...

Re: CHALLENGE! Photos!

Hi Recio/Stefan, I'm a bit of late joiner and this is an interesting topic that have resurfaced. Even though this mutation combination have been identified, I'd like to discuss the possibility of an alternative (even if only academic, and discussing for the sake of discussing). If I had to guess, I ...

Re: confused at pairing results

thanx johan, I'm wondering what a d/f turquoise blue looks like, never seen one before. Are they alot darker like d/f violet? or are they more greyish? Kimi, I'm not sure to what bird you are referring to. A bird can either be turquoise (or as some call it, a DF or homozygous turquoise; notice that...

Re: Breeding age

If it is an ADM pied mutation, then it is possible as the cocks never get a ring. :)

Otherwise, it is possible, but not as likely. I've seen some cocks breed when 2 years old prior to their ring showing, but these are mostly cocks that was born very early in a season.

Re: confused at pairing results

Kimi, your pairing example is for a homozygous parblue (Turquoise) bird, which would always give heterozygous parblue (TurquoiseBlue) offspring when paired to a blue bird. These birds are not as common. Some breeders refer to them as a DF turquoise, although this is frowned upon by others who use th...

Re: different mutation terminology & how to achieve purple?

Thanks for clearing that up, Molossus. I have not giving much thought or credibility to the deep factor/Oz cobalt, mostly because a large part of the international fraternity have not recognized the mutation as one different from the normal dark factor. Having said that, I've spent some time over th...

Re: different mutation terminology & how to achieve purple?

Dbl factor deep blues paired to the above with the aim of breeding a dbl factor violet deep blue(dbl factor)cobalt. Hi Molossus, what do you mean with deep blue? Is it a blue bird with a single or double dark factor (i.e. cobalt or mauve), or something different? Although I'm yet to see a bird with...
